GNAC: Five Lasell student-athletes earn weekly conference honors

NEWTON, Mass. – Five Lasell University student-athletes in four sports received weekly honors Monday from the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) for their performances in Laser action last week.

Senior Andrew Fidalgo (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) and junior Alex Beauchemin (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) were named GNAC Men's Lacrosse Player and Goalie of the Week, respectively; graduate student Jordan McComb (Narragansett, R.I./Mount St. Charles Academy) repeated as GNAC Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week; freshman Katie Hopkins (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Memorial) was selected GNAC Softball Co-Player and Co-Rookie of the Week; and freshman CJ Mills (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) was tabbed GNAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week.

A Second Team All-Conference attackman in 2019, Fidalgo finished this past week with six goals, four assists and 10 ground balls in a 2-0 week for Lasell, and scored the game-winning goal with 29 seconds remaining Saturday in Lasell's key 12-11 GNAC victory over Norwich University. He tallied four goals and four assists Tuesday in Lasell's 15-10 triumph over New England College, and added two goals, including the game-winner, in the big win over Norwich.

Fidalgo shares the team lead this spring with 26 points and ranked tied for second with 18 goals and eight assists. He is ranked seventh in the GNAC in goals, tied for fifth in points, tied for 11th in assists, and tied for 10th with 23 ground balls.

A Second Team All-Conference goalie in 2019, Beauchemin posted a 2-0 record with 27 saves, a .562 save percentage and a 10.50 goals against average in the 2-0 week for Lasell. He made 16 saves on 26 shots Tuesday in Lasell's 15-10 non-conference triumph over New England College, and tallied 11 saves on 22 shots Saturday in the Lasers' key 12-11 GNAC victory over rival Norwich University.

Beauchemin leads the GNAC this spring with 87 saves and is tied for first with five victories. He ranks fourth with a .554 save percentage and a 10.49 goals against average.

A three-time All-GNAC midfielder, McComb posted another strong all-around game in Lasell's only outing of the week, a 21-8 GNAC victory Sunday over Dean College. She paced the offense with five goals and six assists while collecting eight draw controls, seven ground balls and one caused turnover. Monday's honor marked the third time this spring and fifth time in her career that McComb has been recognized with the GNAC's top weekly honor.

McComb leads the GNAC this spring with 25 goals and ranks second with 17 assists and 42 points. She is also tied for first with 33 draw controls and ranks third with 19 ground balls and seventh with 10 caused turnovers.

A rookie third baseman, Hopkins batted .667 (8 for 12) with a double, two home runs, eight RBI and eight runs scored in a 2-2 week for the Lasers (0-2 GNAC). She was 4-for-7 Tuesday with a double, five RBI and five runs scored in a doubleheader sweep of Fisher College, including four RBI in the opener, and she went 4-for-5 Saturday with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored in a doubleheader loss at Johnson & Wales University. She was 3-for-3 in the second game with a pair of solo home runs, the first two of her career.

Hopkins shares the GNAC lead this spring with 14 runs batted in and ranks tied for third with two home runs. She is also second on the team and seventh in the GNAC with 15 hits, and second on the team and eighth in the conference with a .484 batting average.

A rookie righthander, Mills posted a 1-1 record in two starts with a 1.00 earned run average and nine strikeouts and just six hits and one walk in nine innings of work. He earned his first career win Sunday in Lasell's victory over Albertus Magnus, going six innings and giving up just three runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk, striking out five. He suffered a non-conference loss Wednesday in a start at Brandeis, pitching three innings and allowing one unearned run on two hits while fanning four.

Mills has made four appearances for Lasell this spring (three starts), posting a 1-2 record with a 7.59 ERA. He had pitched 10.2 innings, allowing nine earned runs on 12 hits, striking out nine. He ranks third on the team in starts and victories and fourth in strikeouts.
