Springfield, MA - The Lasell College women's soccer team started the 2011 campaign on the road Saturday evening at the Springfield College Invitational held at Brock-Affleck Field. In the first round of the tournament, the Lasers fell to host institution, Springfield College, 1-0.
The first half was a back-and-forth toss in the midfield with both goaltenders seeing five shots in the frame. The stalemate ended at 39:22 on a shot by Pride sophomore Kim Rasmussen (East Berlin, CT). Senior Katie Mantie (Wallingford, CT) set up Rasmussen for her first collegiate goal by leading her from midfield, beating out two Laser defenders, and connecting with Rasmussen for the redirect into net.
The goal would hold up through the rest of the contest despite Lasell's best efforts to the contrary. A total of six Lasers took shots in the game. Senior captain Meredith Hessler (Middletown, RI) and senior Jordynn Frollo (Uxbridge, MA) each had two shots while Jamie Osterberg (Monroe, CT), Courtney Callanan (Taunton, MA), Bridget Lynch (Dover, NH) and Jessica Taylor (Standish, ME) attempted one shot a piece.
Senior goalkeeper Elizabeth Stickley (Mashpee, MA) clocked all 90 minutes of the contest between the pipes for the Lasers, making one save.
Springfield goalkeeper Erin Greenstein (Framingham, MA), who also spent the entire contest in goal, turned away three Laser shots in the first half and two more in the second.
The Lasers (0-1) will face off against Vassar College at 5:00pm on Sunday, September 4th in a clash for 3rd place of the tournament. The Championship game will see host team Springfield College battle against Westfield State for the title.
