MVB: Lasell Handles #6 Vassar in Three Sets

Newton, MA – The Lasell University Men's Volleyball team defeated the sixth-ranked Vassar Brewers in a clean sweep of three straight sets on Friday night, 25-22, 25-20, and 25-23. The win boosted the Lasers to a 6-6 record overall.

The Lasers were able to get back on track tonight with a huge win after dropping their last two matches. The match was tight early as both sides went back and forth, but Lasell used a 7-3 run in the first set to separate themselves, taking an early lead, 10-6. Both sides traded blows, but it was Lasell who took the first set, scoring five of the sets last seven points.

The second set was just as close as the teams continued to trade points. After Coach Jeff Vautrin called a timeout while leading 22-18, the Lasers dropped two consecutive points, but were able to battle back quickly. Graduate student Brendan Joyce and junior Theo Zaharewicz each had a kill in the final three points to give the Lasers a two-set lead on Vassar.

The third and final set was no different from the first two as both sides were dead even the entire time. After a Vassar timeout was called while ahead 22-21, Lasell would score four of the next five points as senior Jan Baranowski buried a kill to give the Lasers the third and final set and clinch a victory.

Graduate student Jesus Garcia tallied 26 assists in the victory bringing him to 2,957 career assists. Zaharewicz led the way with 11 kills, following him was junior Jordan Shinaut with 10 and Baranowski with seven. Defensively Baranowski totaled four blocks and Zaharewicz tallied eight digs.

Up Next: The Lasers stay at home for a battle with Springfield College at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, February 21st.
