MVB: Lasell Splits Tri-Match

Newton, MA - The Lasell Lasers competed in a tri-match on Saturday with Baruch and #1 Stevens. In the opening match they defeated Baruch 25-23, 25-19, 25-15. In their second match against #1 Stevens, the Lasers fell 19-25, 16-25, 15-25.The Lasers are now 9-7, while Baruch is 5-7, and Stevens is 19-2.

Match One

In the first match of the day against Baruch, the Lasers got out to a quick 5-0 lead. But the Bearcats would score nine of the next 12 points to take a 9-8 lead. The two teams would go back and forth the rest of the set, with the Lasers going on a crucial 7-3 run to grab a 19-16 lead. They would clinch the set on a kill by Theo Zaharewicz, winning it 25-23.

After Baruch scored three of the first four points in the second set, the Lasers scored five of the next six to take an early 6-4 lead. The Lasers grabbed control of the set with another 5-1 run to take a 11-8 lead. From that point, the Lasers slowly built their lead, and ultimately win the set 25-19.

The Lasers took an early 5-1 lead in set number three, and they would build on that by scoring in bunches. On four separate occasions the Lasers would score at least three straight points, distancing themselves from the Bearcats, and winning the set 25-15.

Jordan Shinaut led the offense for the Lasers, collecting 14 kills on 17 attacks. Theo Zaharewicz also had a strong showing, scoring eight kills in the match. Both Carter Phillips and Jasper Schultz had five kills. Jesus Garcia continued his great season by totaling 23 set assists. Zaharewicz led the team six digs.

Match Two 

Stevens was the team to get out to the early lead, scoring seven of the first 10 points. But the Lasers would go on a 6-2 run to tie things at nine. They would go back and forth for a while, and the Ducks held a 20-19 lead. The next point was a big turning point, as the Lasers were certain that a Jan Barnowski attack hit the fingers of the attempting blockers. But it was ruled that the attack sailed over, and the Ducks proceeded to score the next four points to win the first set 25-19.

For the second straight set the two teams sat tied at nine. But this time the Ducks went on a run, scoring nine of the next 13 points to take a 18-13 lead. After a Laser point on a kill from Theo Zaharewicz, the Ducks that went on a 7-2 run to finish the set with a 25-16 win.

The third set saw the Ducks take the early 8-3 lead. While the Lasers fought back, they were unable to ever get back within closer than three, as the Ducks coasted to a 25-15 set win, giving them the match 3-0.

For the second straight match of the day the Lasers were led by Jordan Shinaut in kills, this time with nine. Jesus Garcia led the way with 21 set assists. Jasper Schultz led the team with five digs.
