MVB: Lasers Tripped Up By Conference Foe Wentworth

Newton, MA - The Lasell Lasers fell to the Wentworth Leopards in straight sets Thursday night by a final score of 25-23, 25-21, 25-23. The Lasers fall to 8-6 overall, and 3-2 in conference play. The Leopards are now 9-6 and 7-0.

The Lasers got out to an early 4-1 lead, but the first set was the definition of a back and forth affair. The set was tied at 19 when the Leopards scored three straight points, only the second time all set that either team scored more than two straight points. The Lasers would respond with two straight points of their own to make it 22-21, but the two teams would trade the last five points back and forth, with the Leopards winning the set 25-23.

The second set was also close, as the score was 11-10 WIT early. An 8-3 run from the Leopards gave them the largest individual set lead of the match at 19-13. But a 7-3 run response from the Lasers made it 22-20. But it was too little, too late, as the Leopards scored three of the last four points to take set two 25-21.

Things were once again very close in the third set, as the two teams were tied at 12. After two straight points from the Lasers on kills by Jordan Shinaut and Theo Zaharewicz, the Leopards scored three straight to make it 15-14 WIT. But a 5-2 run from the Lasers gave them the 19-17 lead. But the Leopards would not go away, and scored four straight points, and they would squeak out a 25-23 set win, giving them the match 3-0.

The Lasers were led by Theo Zaharewicz, as he had 14 kills on 28 attempts. Behind him was Jordan Shinaut with eight and Jasper Shultz with six. No other Laser had more than two kills. Jesus Garcia led the team with 26 set assists. Defensively, Alex Weinhaus led the team with 11 digs.

Up Next - The Lasers wil; host a tri-match on Saturday, March 4th. First facing off against Baruch, and then playing #1 Stevens. Those matches will start at 11am and 3pm respectively.
