MVB: Lasers win tightly-contested affair against Wentworth on Senior Day

Newton, Mass. – The Lasell University Lasers men's volleyball team won a close contest with the Wentworth Institute of Techonology Leopards, 3-2, on senior day at Lasell Athletic Center.

The highlight for the Lasers Saturday were the four seniors Dillon DeSouza (Enfield, Conn.), Aaron Waitekus (Norwood, Mass.), Cobi Moore (Danville, N.H.), and graduate student Scott Sterenberg (Oceanside, N.Y.).

Lasell scored points in a hurry in the first set scoring the first six of seven points causing Wentworth to take a timeout following a kill by freshman Ryan Fuller (Wayland, Mass.). Both teams would trade points and runs down the stretch, before a three-point run capped off with a kill by Waitekus, sealed set one 25-19 in favor of the Lasers.

Set two was tightly contested with no side having a lead greater than four. Both sides traded points down the stretch but, it was Lasell who found a late run down three points to tie and take the lead with only one point needed. Wentworth would have the answer though pushing the set to extra points before winning on a service ace by sophomore Colin Stockton (Hummelstown, Pa.) 27-25.

Wentworth carried the momentum of grabbing set two and used it to come out strong in set three scoring seven of the first ten. Kills by Stockton, and graduate student Ryan Love (Gaithersburg, Md.) helped the Leopards score the last nine of eleven points to take a two to one lead 25-14.

Set four was a much closer battle than set three was with both teams trading points again. Lasell would hold the lead early before Wentworth came back to keep it close. Kills by Fuller and Sterenberg helped push the Lasers to win, 25-22, and force a fifth set.

Just like the entirety of the match the fifth set was tight to the end finding its way to extra points. In extra points the lead would trail between the Leopards and the Lasers before three kills by Sterenberg propelled the Lasers to the win 20-18 and the match win.

Sterenberg led the Lasers with 13 kills and had 10 digs, while Fuller had 12 kills and added 10 digs. Sophomore Brenden Joyce (Randolph, Mass.) had 14 digs while adding 10 kills and sophomore Jesus Garcia (Honolulu, Hawaii) led the Lasers with 39 assist and added 10 digs. Moore led the Lasers in digs with 20.

For the Leopards graduate student Anthony Krzykowski (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and freshman Jacob LaBouliere (Pipersville, Pa.) had 16 kills. Graduate student Peter Kiembczyk (Penfield, N.Y.) had 24 digs to lead the game.

The Lasers will be back in action on Wednesday April 7 at 7:00 when they take on Wentworth.
