MVB: Three Lasell athletes named All-GNAC; Sterenberg and Garcia highlight Second Team

NEWTON, Mass. – Three players on the Lasell University men's volleyball team were recognized Tuesday with selection to the 2020 All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), as voted by the GNAC's head coaches.

Senior outside hitter Scott Sterenberg (Oceanside, N.Y.) earned himself a spot on the All-Conference Second Team. He was joined by freshman Jesus Garcia (Honolulu, Hawaii) who also earned All-Conference Second team. Junior libero Cobi Moore (Danville, N.H.) was selected to the All-Conference Third Team.

Sterenberg, being the lone senior on this young Lasers team, proved his leadership this year for his team with some impressive numbers. He led the Lasers in kills with 215, kills per set with 2.69, service aces with 42, and was second on the team in digs with 107. Sterenberg was also ranked fifth in the GNAC for kills per set while tying for second in kills.

Garcia highlighted the All-GNAC Second Team by being the only freshman on the squad. He executed in his first season as a Laser by running a young offense from the setter position. Garcia led his team in assists with 595, assists per set with 8.75, and was second on the team in service aces and digs per set. Garcia also ranked highly in the GNAC as a whole. As a rookie he was second in the GNAC in total assists and fourth for assists per set. Garcia was also selected as Rookie of the Week two times for the Lasers this year. Garcia was also selected to the All-Sportsmanship Team in his rookie campaign.

Moore led the Lasers defensively in multiple areas this year. He led the team in digs and digs per set with 247 digs and 3.05 digs per set. Moore also passed above a 2.5 rating on serve receive. Moore placed in the top of the conference when it came to digs and digs per set. He led the GNAC in digs by a margin of 35 and was second in digs per set. Moore tied a school record for digs in a five-set match early on in the year against Nichols College with 23 digs.

With the season cut short, the Lasers finished the year off with a 10-12 record under first-year head coach Jeff Vautrin. They placed third in the GNAC only behind Wentworth and Rivier with a 3-2 conference record.
