Two Lasell University athletes recognized by GNAC; Garcia earns Rookie of the Week, Day selected Player of the Week

NEWTON, Mass. – Two Lasell University student-athletes have been recognized by the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) on Monday for their dominant performances over the past week.

Freshman Jesus Garcia (Honolulu, Hawaii) was named GNAC Rookie of the Week for men's volleyball and sophomore EJ Day (Norwalk, Conn.) earned Player of the Week honors for men's basketball.

Garcia recorded 129 assists in four matches for the Lasers. He averaged 8.60 assists/set while also earning 36 digs. He averaged 2.40 digs/set over the four-match span. Garcia also added 9 kills on a .250 hitting percentage in the Lasers 1-3 week. In the win over Eastern Nazarene, Garcia collected 47 assists on the night to go along with 15 digs.

Day averaged 37.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in a 2-0 week for Lasell, shooting 62.5 percent from the field (20-of-32), 44.5 percent from three-point range (5-of-11), and 83.3 percent from the free throw line (30-of-36). He poured in a career-high 45 points with seven rebounds and six assists in a 99-76 GNAC victory over Regis College, making 5-of-7 from three-point land, 12-of-16 overall and 16-of-20 from the FT line; and he scored 30 points in an 88-80 GNAC triumph over Rivier University, shooting 50 percent from the field (8-of-16) and converting 14-of-16 from the charity stripe. Day is averaging 26.3 points in his eight games with the Lasers, shooting 52.3 percent from the field, including 30.4 points per game and 51.7 shooting percentage against GNAC opponents.

Men's volleyball will hit the road this coming weekend, February 7 & 8 to compete in the Nazareth tournament where they will play four matches in two days.

Men's basketball squares up against Saint Joseph (Conn.) on Tuesday, February 4 at 8 p.m.
