BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Lasell College men's volleyball team swept Newbury College 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-16)on Wednesday evening in the Pappas Gymnasium. Junior opposite hitter Patrick MacDonald (Floral Park, N.Y.) posted a .611 attack percentage with 12 kills on 18 attempts with just one error to lead the Lasers to their second win of the season. In a back-and-forth first set, the Nighthawks found themselves down by one late but they refused to go away. Junior middle hitter Khalil Paige (Baltimore, Md.) and first year setter Luis Aranda (Boyle Heights, Calif.) appeared to swing momentum over to the Nighthawk bench going up with a double block to tie the match at 20. But the Lasers were too strong ending the first set with a 5-2 run. Lasell pushed their lead to 2-0 edging out Newbury, 25-21, in the second set. Senior outside hitter Jeffrey Vautrin (Chicopee, Mass.) was near perfect from the floor in game two recording four kills on six attempts for a staggering .667 attack percentage while senior setter Andrew Glenn (Wesport, Conn.) paced the offense with eight assists. The Nighthawks hung tough, registering their best attack percentage of the night in the third set, hitting .333 with 11 kills on 21 attempts with just for miscues as a team. Coming alive, offensively, in the second set, Robidoux led the Nighthawks with eight kills on 10 attempts with just one error for a .700 attack percentage. However, it was not enough to stymie the Laser offense, who continued to remain red-hot hitting a staggering .588 as a team in the third set. Senior outside hitter Ryan Jackson (Canton, Ohio) led the way tallying four kills on five attempts with just one error en route to a 25-16 game three victory. Robidoux led the Nighthawks posting a .476 attack percentage, tallying a match-high 13 kills on 21 attempts with just three errors. In his first start of his collegiate career, Aranda paced the Nighthawk offense with 22 assists while Paige was solid at the net with team-high two block assists. Lasell improves to 2-1 while Newbury sinks to 0-1. The Nighthawks return to the hard-court on Friday evening January 29th when they travel to upstate New York for a 6:00 p.m. tilt with Sage. The Lasers will also be in action on Friday night when they go on the road to Kean University at 7:00 p.m. |
