Men's Volleyball Takes Down Albertus 3-0

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (3/26/15) - The Lasell College men's volleyball team swept Albertus Magnus 3-0 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match up in the CMM Athletic Center. The win boosts Lasell to 7-3 in conference play and 19-7 on the year, while Albertus drops  to 2-7 in the GNAC and 3-10 overall.

The Lasers were led by senior Dan Raffol (Natick, Mass.) and junior Drew Caruso (Haverhill, Mass.), who both tallied eight kills. Junior Andrew Glenn (Westport, Conn.) dished out 28 assists for the Lasers, while senior Matt Dugan (New Lenox, Ill.) added 16. Freshman Phu Do (Chicopee, Mass.) led all players defensively, with eight digs on the night.

Senior Glenn Johnson (Newington, Conn.) paced Albertus with 14 kills in 33 attempts, while he added one dig and one block. Albertus' Justin Tharau (Burlington, Conn.) handed out 14 assists for Albertus to go along with one dig.

Albertus registered positive hitting performances in tonight's sets but the Lasell defensive was solid all night long. Lasell's offense was also on top of its game as the Lasers hit .469 on the night, while registering a 20-kill second set outing with just two hitting errors in 24 tries.

The Lasers took the first two sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-13, featuring a combined six kills apiece from Raffol and sophomore Patrick MacDonald (Floral Park, N.Y.). Lasell distanced itself in the match after a Cruso kill, set by Dugan, to take a 19-12 lead. Jackson took consecutive serves sent back by a pair of Falcons' errors, leading to an eventual 25-15 victory.

Sophomore Tristan Davis (Rochester, N.Y.) held serve for four straight points in the second set to go along with a service ace, a kill from junior Jeff Vautrin (Chicopee, Mass.) and block assists from Caruso and MacDonald. The Lasers then went on a 10-4 run on the hosts lead by junior Ryan Jackson (Canton, Ohio), MacDonald, Raffol, and Vautrin. A MacDonald kill put the match out of reach for the Falcons at 23-10, finalized by a kill from Jackson to secure 25-13 win.

In the final set, Albertus bounced back and battled with the Lasers until the very end. There were six tied scores as well as one lead change early on in the frame.  Lasell would come out on top as Jackson added seven kills, one block and two assists for the Lasers for the closest set of the game at 25-21.

Both teams hop back into GNAC action against the Saints of Emmanuel College. Lasell will welcome the Saints on Tuesday, March 31 at 7:00 p.m., while the Falcons travel to Boston, Mass. for a conference tri-match with Rivier University on March 28 at 12:00 p.m.
