No. 6 Springfield Takes Men’s Volleyball in Straight Sets 3-0

NEWTON, Mass. (3/10/15) – The Lasell College men's volleyball team lost to No. 6 Springfield College on Tuesday night in the Athletic Center dropping their record to 15-5 overall and sending Springfield to 14-5 on the season. The Pride won in three straight sets 25-20, 25-22, and 25-16.

Lasell junior Jeffrey Vautrin (Chicopee, Mass.) contributed a team-high 15 kills and a service ace. Senior Dan Raffol (Natick, Mass.) had eight kills, while junior Andrew Glenn (Westport, Conn.) set the ball 33 times during the match.

Springfield junior Greg Woods (Middletown, Conn.) recorded a match-high 21 kills, earning a .567 hitting percentage. Senior Keaton Pieper (Dallas, Texas) tallied 43 assists during the contest and senior Angel Perez (Naranjito, Puerto Rico) struck the ball for 12 kills.

The Pride and Lasers alternated serves through the first 10 points of the set until Springfield went on a 4-0 run with freshman Ricardo Padilla Ayala (San Juan, Puerto Rico) on the serve. With a crucial block from Vautrin and junior Ryan Jackson (Canton, Ohio), the Lasers narrowed the set to three (13-10).  Lasell was only able to close the gap to five points (25-20) giving Springfield the first set.

The Lasers were relentless through the second set, having an answer for the first 17 points of the set (9-8).  Springfield went on a 4-1 run giving them a four-point lead (13-9).  The Lasers' 5-2 run during the last seven points, including a service ace from Vautrin, wasn't enough as the Pride held on to take the set 25-22.

Springfield jumped to a seven-point lead (18-11) via a strike from Woods assisted by Pieper. Two kills from Raffol couldn't give the Lasers enough to come back, as the Pride closed the game with a final 4-1 run, ending the set 25-16.

Lasell will travel to Cambridge, Mass. for a tri-match against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Vassar College on Saturday, March 14.  On Wednesday, March 11 Springfield heads to Harvard University for a 7:00 p.m. game.
