Men's Volleyball Falls to #9 NYU

NEWTON, Mass. (2/1/14) - The Lasell College men's volleyball team fell to the Violets of New York University, 3-0, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon. The Violets defeated the Lasers, 25-20, 25-22, and 25-21, as the visitors improved to 3-1 on the season, while the Lasers fell to 4-2 overall. 

Sophomore Jeff Vautrin (Chicopee, Mass.) stepped up for the Lasers on offense by leading the team with 11 kills on 19 total attacks. Sophomore Andrew Glenn (Westport, Conn.) helped the Lasers by handing out 22 assists.

Connor Mortland (San Diego, Calif.) led the Violets by handing out a match-high 35 assists, while freshman Chase Klein (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) joined him by having a match-high nine digs. Senior Nick Capriccio (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Sophomore Colin LaPorte (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) each led the visitors with ten kills. As a team, the Violets recorded a season-high .412 hitting percentage in this match.  

The first set opened with the Lasers and Violets trading points back and forth which knotted the match at 5-5. The Violets would go on a 12-6 run with three consecutive kills by Jacob Getz (Santa Cruz, Calif.) making the score 17-11. The Lasers would get as close as three points at 20-17 with three successful serves from Drew Caruso (Haverhill, Mass.), but the Violets would pull away to take the first set 25-20. The second set, began with the Lasers grabbing three out of a possible four points with two kills from Vautrin, before the Violets traded points to tie to the match at 10-10. The Violets would take the lead 13-10 after five successful serves from Getz. The Lasers matched the Violets point for point until the end of the match getting as close as two points at 23-21, but falling 25-22. Opening the third and final set on a 13-6 run, the Violets would never look back as they took the clinching set 25-21 and the match 3-0. 

The Violets continue their trip as they head to Emmanuel College on Sunday February 2nd at 1:00 p.m. in non-conference action, while the Lasers will host non-conference opponent Lesley University on Thursday February 6 at 7:00 p.m.
