Men's Volleyball Topples Mount Ida in GNAC Match

Newton, Mass. (3/26/13) - The Lasell College men's volleyball team bounced back with a 3-0 road victory over cross-town foe Mount Ida College on Tuesday night. The three set victory by scores of 25-18, 25-15, 25-23 pushed the Lasers back over .500 in conference play at 4-3 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, and 11-9 overall. The Mustangs dropped to 1-9 in league action and 5-18 on the season.

Alex Mill (Danville, N.H.) led the way for Lasell with a match-high 14 kills, and Dan Raffol (Natick, Mass.) added six kills and a team-high eight digs. Julius Rosario (Stoughton, Mass.) fininshed with 4 solo blocks, keying a strong Lasers effort at the net as the totaled 11 solo blocks in the match. Ryan Jackson (Massilon, Ohio) tallied a team-high 22 assists in helping direct an efficient Lasell attack that saw the visitors post a .337 hitting percentage.

Spencer Hastings (Orlando, Fla.) keyed the Mustangs attack with 13 kills, getting help from Nick Melilo (North Haven, Conn.) and Nick Schibi (Torrington, Conn.) who each chipped in five kills for Mount Ida. Brady Rodriguez posted a match-high 27 assists in the losing effort.

Lasell used a 13-4 run to break open a narrow 6-4 lead in the opening set into a 19-8 advantage on their way to a 25-18 win in the first set. Similarly in the second set, Lasell broke open a 6-5 second set lead by scoring 11 of the next 15 points to build a 17-9 cushion, going on to win 25-15.

The third set was a closely contested affair, with the host Mustangs holding on to a slim marging through most of the set. Lasell trailed 22-19 before Lasell scored six of the next seven points to secure the come-from-behing third set victory and close out the match.

Mount Ida will host Emmanuel on Thursday Mar. 28th at 6:00 p.m., while the Lasers will return to the court when they visit Emerson College on Saturday Mar. 30th for a tri-match with Wentworth Institute of Technology.
