Lasers Dominate Mustangs in GNAC Matchup

Newton, Mass.-  Lasell College dominated the Mustangs of Mount Ida College in a three set sweep in GNAC men's volleyball action on Tuesday night.  The Lasers were led by the play of Dustin and Trevor Foster (Ashford, Conn.) who each put down seven kills.  Dustin hit with no errors for an impressive .778 clip, while Trevor added six blocks over the course of the evening.

 

The Lasers fell behind in the first set 8-5 before going on a twelve point run, served by Tyler Hammond (Hadley, Mass.), to give them a 15-8 advantage.  The Lasers allowed Mount Ida to score just six more points in the game to close the first set with a decisive 30-14 score.

 

In the second, Lasell once again fell behind early by just a few points, however Dustin Foster sparked the Lasers with three consecutive aces early in the second to put them up 12-11.  The Mustangs tied the game up once more, and remained close through the set, but the Lasers put the game away 30-25.

 

The final set was the Lasers from the start.  The Lasers took as much as a ten point lead before ending the match with a 30-18 victory on a side out kill by Dave Rogers (Belchertown, Mass.).

 

Rogers and Matt Roberts (Agawam, Mass.) each tallied six kills for Lasell and had seven blocks between them.  Freshman setter Brendan McGourn (Southington, Conn.) put up 29 assists in the contest, adding 2 blocks and 3 kills and Lasell's libero Joseph Lipski (Burlington, Conn.) notched seven digs throughout.

 

For the Mustangs, Thomas Belton (Springfield, Mass.) was the Mustangs big power in the middle, putting down seven kills and adding two solo blocks.  Bryan McMenamin (Warminster, PA) had a game-best eight kills, adding seven digs to the mix for the Mustangs, and Mount Ida's sophomore setter Gary Alvarez (Springfield, Mass.) had 16 assists and three digs.

 

Lasell's final regular season contest will take place on their home court on Thursday, March 26th, which will also mark Senior Night for Lipski, Hammond, Dave Rogers, and Gary Gay (Blechertown, Mass.).  First serve will be at 7:00 p.m. following a brief ceremony to honor the senior athletes.
