Lasers Fly Past Eagles

Lasell improved their record to 7-6 overall (3-2 GNAC) after Monday night's men's volleyball match versus the Eagles of Daniel Webster College.  The Lasers flew away with a 3 set victory by scores of 30-16, 30-23, 30-21.  The Eagles now drop to 3-4, and 3-3 in NECVA New England play.

 

Lasell overpowered the Eagles from the opening play as David Rogers (Belchertown, Mass.) fired in a kill from the outside, assisted by Brendan McGourn (Southington, Conn.).  Daniel Webster stayed within points of the Lasers, closing within 2 points at 12-10, but the Lasers went on 5-0 run at that point to take a significant advantage.  The visitors scored just six more points in the game as the Lasers took the first set. 

 

The Eagles took the lead quickly in the second, going up 7-2 before the Lasers began their come from behind victory.  Lasell tied the game at 11-all, then pushed ahead to go up for good, holding a steady four-plus point edge the rest of the set. 

 

The lead changed hands four times in the third set in the early moments.  However, Lasell took the lead at 7-6, and went on three short runs over the course of the final set to seal the victory.

 

David Rogers had a near double-double with 10 kills and nine digs in three sets.  Freshman middle hitter Trevor Foster (Ashford, Conn.) was next in the match with 8 kills on 11 attempts, hitting a .545 clip.  McGourn and Mike Harrington (Billerica, Mass.) each dropped in 6 kills, and McGourn matched with 6 digs and added 35 assists. Andy Cass (Wakefield, RI) picked up 10 digs as the Lasers' libero, playing in all three sets.

 

For the visitors, Nick Emmons (Madison, Conn.) and Ian Catenzaro (Londonderry, NH) each put down six kills from the outside positions, while Eric Smith (Clay, NY) assisted 19 times in the match.  Chris Shannon (Ronkonkoma, NY) led for the Eagles defensively with seven digs.


Lasell goes back into Great Northeast Athletic Conference play tomorrow night at Mount Ida College.  First serve is at 7:00 p.m.
