Lasers Make Quick Work of Falcons

Newton, MA- Lasell College got a quick 3-0 victory over the Falcons of Albertus Magnus in GNAC men's volleyball action tonight on their home court.  The Lasers got off to a fast start with a 30-6 set, followed by a 30-10 second set.  In the third set, the Falcons kept themselves in the game a little bit longer but Lasell was too powerful and finished the match 30-17.

Freshman setter Zack Smith (Agawam, Mass.) served the first ten points of the game for Lasell, diggina an early hole for the visitors.  Alvin Davis (Nassau, Bahamas) gave the Falcons their first side out by putting down a kill from the outside. However, the Lasers were just too much for the Falcons as Dustin Foster (Ashford, Conn.) and David Rogers (Belchertown, Mass.) dropped in four kills each over the remaining points of the game, and Smith distributed 10 assists.  Joseph Lipski (Burlington, Conn.) and Tyler Hammond (Hadley, Mass.) picked up five digs apiece in the set.

The second set was more of the same as the Lasers dominated from start to finish.  Hammond put down three kills for Lasell, as did with Wes Sackman (Sands Point, NY) on the outside to lead in the set.  At 12-5, Lasell's Mike Harrington (Billerica, Mass.) served seven consecutive points, four of which were service aces to give Lasell as significant advantage.  The Lasers finished the game with another service ace by Hammond.

In the final stanza, Sackman, Foster, and Dan Rogers (Belchertown, Mass.) each put down four kills, assisted by Smith and Gary Gay (Belchertown, Mass.) who split time in the setter role.  Harrington was defensively strong with 8 digs in the set, and Sackman and Hammond each added four digs. Gay set up Dan Rogers for his sixth and final kill to seal the match.

Albertus Magnus struggled offensively all night, but gave some fine performances on the defensive side by Kyle Kelly (Stratford, Conn.) who finished with eight digs, and Ryan Mihalyak (West Haven, Conn.) and Davis who had four and three digs a piece, and each added a block.

Foster led for Lasell overall with 9 kills, 3 digs, 4 aces, and 3 solo blocks.  Sackman's .545 clip was the highest of the match, culminating with 7 kills and five digs.  Setters Smith and Gay put up 33 assists between them, and Hammond ended with 7 kills, 9 digs, 4 aces, and 3 assists for a great all-around night.

The Lasers pick up play this weekend at the Bard Tournament where they will face Purchase College on Friday night, and Medgar Evers College on Saturday afternoon.
