MLX: Lasell pulls out win over Plymouth State; Debay scores late game-winner

NEWTON, Mass. – Lasell University scored three unanswered goals late in the fourth quarter Saturday afternoon to pull out a 7-6 victory over Plymouth State University in non-conference men's lacrosse action at Grellier Field.

Trailing 6-4 after six consecutive second-half PSU goals, Lasell rallied with goals by sophomore Bash Cunningham (Norwalk, Conn.) with 5:49 remaining, junior Colby Buccheri (Rowley, Mass.) with 4:23 on the clock, and the eventual game-winner 15 seconds later by freshman Deven Debay (Pelham, N.H.), assisted by Cunningham.

The Lasers pick up their first win over the season, improving to 1-2, while the Panthers drop to 1-2.

Lasell scored two goals in each of the first two quarters to take a 4-0 lead at the intermission, as Lasell sophomore goalie Alex Beauchemin (Westfield, Mass.) stopped all five shots he faced. Sophomore James Anderson (Medway, Mass.) had two goals and two assists in the half and Cunningham and Buccheri had one goal each.

Plymouth State pulled to within one with three consecutive goals in the third quarter, one each by freshman Sam Erb (Milford, N.H.), sophomore Riley Roy (Laconia, N.H.) and freshman Jake Dolcimascolo (Georgetown, Mass.). The Panthers took the lead with the first three goals of the fourth quarter by Roy, senior Trevor Gagnon (Pelham, N.H.) and junior Connor Delea (Manchester, N.H.)

The Lasers answered with the late rally, and Beauchemin did the rest, finishing with 16 saves on 22 shots. Junior Robert Porter (Groveland, Mass.) made 10 saves on 17 shots for the Panthers.

Junior Ben Werner (Boxford, Mass.) won 11-of-15 face-offs for Lasell. Freshman Fran Pino (Methuen, Mass.) picked up a team-high four ground balls, and senior Dan Gorman (Wilbraham, Mass.) recorded a team-high three caused turnovers.

Lasell is back in action on Wednesday, March 11, with a visit to Eastern Connecticut State University for a 6 p.m. match-up. Plymouth State is also on the road Wednesday, traveling to Wheaton College for a 7 p.m. encounter.
