MLX: Lasers outshine Beacons in non-conference affair

NEWTON, Mass. – Lasell College scored seven consecutive goals in the third quarter, rallying from a 6-1 halftime deficit to pull out a 10-8 victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston in a non-conference men's lacrosse game at Grellier Field.

Sophomore Colby Buccheri (Rowley, Mass.) scored all of his game-high three goals in the third-quarter Laser outburst, while senior Ryan Madden (Hingham, Mass.) scored twice in the frame and senior Mike Susi (Gorham, Maine) and freshman Jordan Hines (Essex Jct., Vt.) added one apiece.

The victory was Lasell's sixth in a row as the Lasers improve to 7-1, while upset-minded UMB falls to 1-7. The Lasers posted their third victory this season (3-0) against Little East Conference schools.

Madden finished with two goals and an assist, while Hines scored twice and sophomore Andrew Fidalgo (Wilbraham, Mass.) and freshman James Anderson (Medway, Mass.) contributed a goal and an assist each. Susi picked up five ground balls and junior Dan Gorman (Wilbraham, Mass.) led the defense with four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Sophomore Jack Riley (Wrentham, Mass.) and freshman Darragh Fahey (Walpole, Mass.) led the visitors with two goals and one assist each, while freshman Donny Bickford (Braintree, Mass.) also scored twice. Sophomore Tommy Wilber (Walpole, Mass.) and freshman Jared Coltney (East Longmeadow, Mass.) scooped up five ground balls apiece.

The Beacons led 3-1 after one quarter, and outscored the home team 3-0 in the second quarter to take a 6-1 lead into the intermission. Lasell regrouped at the break and ran off all seven goals of the third quarter to pull ahead 8-6. UMB scored the first goal of the fourth quarter to cut the margin to 8-7, but Lasell answered with two goals in less than a minute to push the margin up to 10-7. The Beacons got one last goal with less than two minutes remaining before the clock ran out.

Junior goalie Ryan Janovic (East Lyme, Conn.) came off the bench with five second-half saves on seven shots to earn his first win of the season. Senior Cameron Dixson (Wayland, Mass.) was strong in the Beacons goal, finishing with 17 saves.

The Lasers return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday, March 30, when they host Rivier University at noon. UMB travels to the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. for a non-conference game, also Saturday at noon.
