BB: Lasell falls to No. 16 Trinity College; Motyka leads Laser hitters

HARTFORD, Conn. – Trinity College scored 16 runs on 19 hits Sunday afternoon to defeat Lasell University, 16-5, in non-conference baseball action on Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium.

The Bantams scored runs in seven of the eight innings that they batted, including six runs in the fifth inning to blow the game open. Trinity is ranked No. 16 nationally in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper pre-season poll after posting a 30-9 overall record last year, hosting the NCAA Division III Regionals for the first time, and advancing one game away from the Super Regionals.

Trinity also defeated the University of Southern Maine in the second game of the day, 5-1, to improve to 3-0 on the season, while Lasell drops to 1-2.

Lasell scored its five runs in the last three innings. Sophomore Matt Motyka (Vernon, Conn.) cracked an RBI single in the seventh to put the Lasers on the scoreboard, and added another RBI single in the eighth. Junior Justin Banks (Corona, Calif.) followed with an RBI double in the eighth, and junior Wyatt Sihvonen (Lebanon, Conn.) cracked a two-run home run in the ninth.

Sihvonen finished with two hits and two runs scored for Lasell, and senior Joe Sullivan (Sandwich, Mass.) had a double and a walk in four trips to the plate.

Junior Sean Doris (Lincoln, R.I.) started on the mound for Lasell and got knocked out in the fifth inning. Senior Patrick Colvin (Lenoxdale, Mass.) and junior Leo Frisella (Tewksbury, Mass.) made relief appearances for the Lasers.

Lasell will play two more games in New England before the Spring Break trip to Florida, as the Lasers take on Pine Manor College on Tuesday, March 10, at 3 p.m. at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass., and Emerson College on Wednesday, March 11, at 3:30 p.m. at St. John's Prep in Danvers, Mass.
