WVB: Lasers Win Four Set Thriller

Newton, MA - In a sweltering gym, the Lasell University Lasers defeated the Wentworth Leopards by a final score of 25-22, 15-25, 25-21, 31-29. The Lasers are now 2-0 on the season, while they handed Wentworth their first loss as they drop to 3-1.

Wentworth took and early lead, and led 12-6 in the first set, but the Lasers would score five of the next six points to draw within two. After falling behind 19-14, the Lasers went on a pivotal 7-0 run behind the serving of Camila Lopez. After things were all tued up at 22, the Lasers scored the final three points of the set, ending it on a McKenna McCool kill.

The second set was all Leopards, as they took it 25-15, but the Lasers bounced back in the third. The two teams would go back and forth, but ultimately a 5-0 run to end the set gave the Lasers a 25-20 set lead.

The fourth set proved to be a battle, as neither team gave up. The Lasers had match points on a number of different occassions, but the Leopards answered every time. It wasn't until a Camila Lopez service Ace made it 31-29 that the Lasers clinched the victory.

Offensively the Lasers were led by McKenna McCool, as she had 18 kills on 30 attempts, good for a .500 attacking percentage. Madalyn Scully was behind her with eight kills. Most of those kills were set up by Sydney Katz or Saige Cambonga-Meyers, as each had 16 set assists. Defensively, Maddie Caro and Katz each had nine digs, while Camila Lopez and Cambonga-Meyers each had seven. The Lasers protected the net well, totalling 10 blocks. A majority of the damage was done by Emily VanHouten, Juliana Medini, and Scully. VanHouten and Scully each had five block assists, while Scully had four in addition to a solo block.

Up next - The Lasers will travel to Northhampton, MA as they participate in the an invitational hosted by Smith College. They will take on Smith and Western England on Friday, Spetember 8th.
