WVB: Lasers drop season opener to Oglethorpe in Gordon Invitational

WENHAM, Mass. The Lasell University women's volleyball team started their season on the road at Gordon College in their first match in the Gordon Invitational vs. Oglethorpe University. The Lasers were swept by the Stormy Petrels 3-0 in sets, with Lasell dropping to 0-1 and Oglethorpe improving to 1-0. 

Lasell had fought very hard in a back and forth first set tying it at 22 apiece until Oglethorpe pulled away with 3 straight points to end the first set at 25-22. The Stormy Petrels then controlled a good portion of the second set as the Lasers tried to successfully pull a comeback and steal the set trailing 17-16 but Oglethorpe responded back and took the second set 25-18. The Lasers got off to a solid start in the third set keeping it very close until Oglethorpe caught fire and closed out the third set 25-11. 

For Oglethorpe, senior Jackie Schner (Boca Raton, FL) led the way with 12 kills followed by juniors Ellie Alfonso (Winder, GA) and Cate Rosenthal (Boca Raton, FL) who both had 9 and 8 kills along with 7 digs apiece. Sophomores Gabbi Phillips (Woodstock, GA) and Maddie Drawdy (Perry, FL) both combined for 28 of the team's 34 assists on the night. Junior Sophia Cendoya (Alpharetta, GA) had a strong defensive performance leading the game with 11 digs.

For Lasell, freshmen Sydney Katz (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Saige Cambonga-Meyers (Springdale, Ark.) combined for 15 of the Laser's 16 assists on the night and sophomore Sabine Milton (San Mateo, Calif.) led with 4 kills. Sophomore McKenna McCool (Loomis, Calif.) led the way defensively with 8 digs, followed by Cambonga-Meyers with 7. 

The Lasers face off tomorrow in a doubleheader at the Gordon Invitational, facing MIT first at 3:00 PM followed by Gordon College at 5:00 PM.
