WVB: Lasers sweep Bucs in non-conference match; Roberts tallies eight kills

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Lasell University women's volleyball team swept the Mass. Maritime Bucs in a non-conference match this past Wednesday at the Clean Harbors Center.

Lasell improves to 9-20 overall while the Bucs drop to 2-19 on the season.

Sophomore Meg Roberts (Newington, Conn.) led all players with eight kills and 13 digs in the sweep. Senior Kelly Cappitella (East Haddam, Conn.) and sophomore Juliana Denning (Lathrop, Calif.) both recorded seven kills apiece to balance out the Lasers attack. Junior Katie Schneider (Covina, Calif.) was dominate from the service line and finished with four aces on the match.

The visiting Lasers began the first set with a 10-1 advantage thanks to the service run from Schneider. The Bucs answered with a run of their own to climb back into the set and eventually take a 18-14 lead. Again, with Schneider at the back line, the Lasers went on another run to gain the 21-18 advantage. The Lasers would take the first set 25-22 on an attacking error from the home team.

Similar to the first set, the Lasers would start the game up 12-2. The Bucs brought the set within three at 19-16 but would never then see a lead. Roberts sealed the set with a kill to win 25-21.

In the final set, neither team could find separation until the Lasers were up 10-7. The Lasers went on another run to take a 19-8 lead over the Bucs. From that point on, Lasell would outscore the Bucs and finish the set at 25-16.

The Lasers will play a tri-match this coming Saturday, November 2 in Keene, N.H. against Southern Maine and Keene State. The Bucs will finish their regular season out this Saturday against Westfield State.
