WVB: Lasers sweep Amcats on Senior Night; Cappitella totals six kills

NEWTON, Mass. – Thursday night, the women's volleyball team honored their two seniors on senior night as Lasell University swept the Amcats of Anna Maria (3-0) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match in the Athletic Center.

The Lasers improve to 8-18 overall and 5-5 in conference. The visiting Amcats drop to 2-17 overall and 0-9 in conference.

Senior Kelly Cappitella (East Haddam, Conn.) led the Lasers offense with six kills alongside six digs for the match. Sophomore Corina Lombardi (York, Maine) tallied seven kills in the middle for the win.

The visitors played the Lasers tough to begin the first set. But, sophomore Dana Coughlin (Cromwell, Conn.) went on a service run to give the Lasers a 13-7 lead. The home team took over the set and would outscore the Amcats 12-4 to close in on a 25-11 victory.

The second set belonged to the Lasers as they started the set on a 17-0 run with junior Katie Schneider (Covina, Calif.) behind the service line. The home team closed out the set 25-6 to take a 2-0 advantage in the match.

In the final set, the Lasers balanced their attack with some of their less experienced players contributing. Freshman Daniella Damasio (Webster, Mass.) opened the scoring for the Lasers with a service ace. A kill from Victoria Hammond (Woburn, Mass.) would tie the game up at 16-16 and force the Lasers to dig deep. An ace from Capitella and an Anna Maria error sealed the deal for the Lasers to win 25-22.

The Lasers will play a tri-match in Standish, Maine on Saturday, October 26 against Saint Joseph's (Maine) and Johnson & Wales.
