WSOC: Lasers fall just short in GNAC title game; ends season at 13-6-1

Providence, Rhode Island - The #2 seed Lasell Women's Soccer team took on #1 Johnson & Wales Saturday night in which the Lasers fell short to the Wildcats 2-1 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship game.

How it happened: In the beginning minutes of the contest, an incredible free kick goal from midfield by Johnson & Wales defender Emily DeRoehn slipped past into the net, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 early on within the first 2-3 minutes of the game. JWU was very aggressive on the attack early on and they would score yet again in the 22nd minute mark when a shot attempt by Jordan Restivo was saved but rebounded and put in by Angelina Oliveira to put them up 2-0. The Wildcats looked very dominant as they went into the half with 10 shot attempts opposed to Lasell's 2. However, during the second half, Lasell had more opportunities to convert on the attack and successfully netted one in at the 58th minute when a corner kick and assist from Michelina D'Agostino set up a goal for freshman Sarah Lynch to cut the deficit down to 2-1. With several opportunities to net one in to tie it up, JWU just did not let it get past them. Despite every chance Lasell had, Johnson & Wales would hold off any chances of extra time and go on to win the GNAC championship defeating the Lasers 2-1 and winning their 3rd consectutive conference title and clinching a berth to the NCAA tournament.

Key notes:

The Lasers officially end their season at 13-6-1 overall and 11-1-1 in GNAC play. Johnson & Wales will await to see who they will face in the NCAA tournament this Monday at 2PM.
