WSOC: Lasers fall to Union

Newton, Mass – The Lasell University women's soccer team took on the Union College Dutchwomen Saturday afternoon and fell 1-0 at Taylor Field.

Lasell had a scoring opportunity early in the first, when Lasell was granted a free kick. Sophomore Emily DeHart (Farmington, CT) served the ball into the box and sophomore Priscilla Martinelli, (Plymouth, MA) got her head on the ball and aimed it towards the net but Union Senior goalkeeper Abby Mitty (Wayland, MA) made a diving safe to keep the ball from going into the net.

Union's best chance in the first came in the 26th minute when Junior forward Amanda Sgueglia (West Islip, NY) took a shot from outside the box, but Lasell's Senior Goalkeeper Kyli Swan (Queen Creek, AZ) made a fantastic save as she leaped to her right to keep the ball out of the net. The teams went into the break scoreless.

After a back-and-forth half where both teams battled for possession, the Dutchwomen broke the tie late in the second half when Sophomore midfielder Grace Buchanan (Burlington, CT) broke away from her defender and shot the ball into the net. This would be the only goal of the game and when the whistle blew, the Dutchwomen won 1-0.

The Lasers are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Albertus Magnus for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Union's next game is Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they travel to Bard College.
