Lasell Women's Soccer drops season opener to Oswego

NEWTON, Mass. — SUNY Oswego sophomore Mackenzie Schaffner (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) broke a 1-1 tie with 21 minutes left in the second half Friday afternoon, resulting in the Lakers overcoming the Lasell women's soccer team, 2-1, at Taylor Field. 

The season opener puts Lasell at 0-1-0, despite being ranked number one in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) preseason poll. Oswego starts its season at 1-0-0

Junior Melissa Vasquez (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored the first goal of the game midway through the first half, setting the tone for Lasell.

The Lakers responded with a goal by junior Corinna Chambers (Highland Mills, N.Y.), assisted by Schaffner, tying the score 1-1 at the 64-minute mark. Schaffer knocked in the game-winner five minutes later.

Oswego held a close 13-11 advantage in shots. Lasell's goalie, freshman Angela Sanzari (North Haven, Conn.) made her collegiate debut with 10 saves. Oswego's goalie junior Emma Allen (Syracuse, N.Y.) saved six of the seven shots she faced on goal.

The Lasers' next game will be on the road against the Judges of Brandeis University on Sunday September 2 at 1 p.m. Oswego will have a break until their next games at the Fredonia Tournament on September 7-8 in Fredonia, N.Y.
