Women's Soccer Wears Down Suffolk

Newton, Mass. (10/28/12) - The Lasell College women's soccer team scored three second half goals enroute to a 3-0 victory over Suffolk University in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon. The Lasers improve to 12-4-1 on the year with the victory, while Suffolk ends their 2012 campaign at 6-11.

Jill Greaney and Bridget Lynch each tallied a goal and an assist, and Kayla Lynch added a goal to push Lasell past the visiting Rams. Leah Pappalardo earned the win in goal for Lasell, while Melissa Brouillette made five saves in a losing effort for the Rams.

The opening 15 minutes of the match hsaw both sides battling for momentum, with the Lasers applying high pressure to create some scoring chances, but struggling to put together stretches of good possession. Suffolk, meanwhile was able to knock the ball around, maintaining solid stretches of possession but were unable to find anything useful in the final third of the field.

As the opening half continued, the hosts began to control the action by pairing their pressure with possession, but were unable to capitalize by finding the back of the net. Lasell held a 7-2 edge in shots in the opening half, as well as a 6-1 lead in corner kicks.

Jill Greaney broke the hosts scoring drought in the 57th minute when her high arching ball from 30 yards out on the left flank caught Brouillette off her line, bouncing into the side netting at the far post and giving Lasell a 1-0 lead.

Greaney then fed Bridget Lynch for her 20th goal of the season, tying the school record for single season goals, in the 81st minute and putting Lasell ahead 2-0. Lasell then added some insurance in the 84th minute when Bridget found sister Kayla open in the box who finished easily to produce the final 3-0 margin.

Lasell will host Emmanuel College in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament semifinals on Thursday November 1st at 2pm.
