Lasers and Raiders Clash Ends in Double OT Standstill

Newton, MA-- Lasell's Arianna DiOrio (Revere, MA) and Rivier's Deanna Cetto (Sterling, MA) each tallied goals which left today's Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer campaign in a 1-1 stalemate after two overtime periods. The Lasers stand at 5-2-1 this season (2-1-1 GNAC) and the Raiders land at 4-3-1 (1-1-1 GNAC).

It was an even matchup between Lasell and Rivier that lead to the deadlocked game after 110 minutes of play.  The teams went shot-for-shot with each other in the first period (7) as well as each of the overtime periods (3, 1),  with Lasell gaining three extra chances in the second half (10-7).  Both Lasell's Ashley Parrelli (Marshfield, MA) and Rivier's Christine Surber (Langdon, NH) made eight saves in their respective nets during the GNAC battle.

Cetto registered the first goal in the 33rd minute, scoring unassisted to put the visitors on top.  DiOrio, however, equalized the score less than 3 minutes later dribbling down the left field and lofting a high shot just out of reach of Surber in the top right corner.

With just seconds remaining before the halftime break, Cetto had a chance to break the tie when she challenged Parrelli in a breakaway situation. Cetto drove a shot at net past a diving Parrelli which slammed off the post before getting a second chance on the retracted shot. Two additional shots ensued, both averted by Parrelli as the finals moments of the half ended.

In the second half, Lasell's close-call came from a Meredith Hessler (Middletown, RI) chance at the top of the eighteen which skimmed the top of the crossbar as it sailed out of play.  Hessler's shot came with just 12 minute remaining in regulation.  Both goal keepers made four saves in the second half to force the extra sessions.

Two minutes into the first overtime, Rivier's Sarah Richard (Raymond, NH) looked to end the game with a close pick up on the right wing, and a quick release across the net, however Parrelli punched the ball over the top of the net to hold the Raiders at bay.

The final horn sounded with neither team managing to rein in the necessary goal for the win.

Lasell will host Johnson & Wales University in their next  GNAC match, on Tuesday, September 28th, at 4:00 p.m. on Taylor Field.
