Providence, RI- Rhode Island College women's soccer team defeated Lasell College, 1-0, on Tuesday night. The lone goal of the evening was scored by senior midfielder Christina Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) who was celebrating her senior night at the event.
The Lasers saw their three game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Anchorwomen and their overall record fell to 8-5-2 after the non-conference match.
Lasell held the advantage in field position for the majority of the game, finishing with a 23-9 edge in shots and an 8-1 mark in corner kicks. Unfortunately, most of the Lasers shots were off net and the others were saved by Rhode Island's goalkeeper Maddie Pirri (Bristol, RI). Pirri ended the contest with nine saves.
A scoreless first half made way for an exciting second half as each of the teams had late chances to score. Anchorwoman Danielle Cartier (Lincoln, RI) earned a breakaway first as she closed in on Lasell's netminder Elizabeth Stickley (Mashpee, Mass.) but was unsuccessful in the attempt. Shortly afterwards, Lasell's junior forward Allyson Bushey (Westminster, Mass.) received a nice feed from sophomore midfielder Molly Clarke (Berlin, Conn.) but her shot just missed wide of the goal.
Early in the 63rd minute, Rhode Island's freshman midfielder Alison Massed (Warren, RI) broke down the wing with Tavana on her right-hand side. Massed tossed a pass through the middle to the veteran Anchorwoman who drilled a shot past Stickley that was just underneath the crossbar.
Lasell kept the pressure on over the final minutes of the contest but they were unable to capitalize on any of their 13 shots.
Bushey led the Lasers with five attempts on the Anchorwomen's goal. Stickley finished with two saves in the effort.
Lasell faces off at Johnson & Wales University on Thursday, October 29th for their final regular season game. The Lasers and the Wildcats will battle it out at 5:30 p.m. for the chance to host the first round of the GNAC tournament.
