Women's Lacrosse: Gadsden scores twice in 19-5 loss to Saint Joseph's College of Maine

NEWTON, Mass. - Freshman McKenna McCool (Loomis, Calif.) scored her first collegiate goal for the Lasell University women's lacrosse team during a 19-5 setback to GNAC-rival Saint Joseph's College of Maine Tuesday afternoon at Grellier Field.

Senior attack Sophia Gadsden (Randolph, Mass.) continued her tremendous season for the Lasers (2-5, 2-3 GNAC), finding the back of the net twice, as she leads Lasell with 22 goals this season. Senior goalie Devin Zambruno (Plympton, Mass.) made a game-leading 14 saves. Junior Sheridan Blaha (Waltham, Mass.) tallied her second collegiate assist in her second game.

Sydney Brady (Westfield, Mass.) and Emily Chapdelaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.) each scored a goal, while Teresa Kessner (Brentwood, N.Y.) posted an assist. Brady has 18 goals and 19 points this year, Kessner has compiled 13 goals and 13 assists and Chapdelaine has tallied eight goals and six assists. Tessner ranks fifth in the GNAC in assists during the 2022 season.

The Monks (9-0, 5-0 GNAC) were led by Lydia Dexter (5 goals, 3 assists), Mackenzie Siebert (2 goals, 2 assists), Cailyn Wesley (3 goals), Carson Battaglia (3 goals) and Bridget Collins (3 goals). Morgan Wright earned the win in net, playing the first half and making two saves.  

Saint Joseph's built a 7-0 lead with 5:13 remaining in the first quarter behind three goals by Dexter. McCool and Chapdelaine found the back of the net during the first half, but the Monks took a 12-2 lead into halftime.

Gadsden scored twice in the second half and Brady posted a third-quarter goal, but seven second-half goals by the Monks clinched the 14-point victory for the visitors.

Kessner finished with a team-high five ground balls, while Kaitlin Bedell and Sophie Fistori each recorded two caused turnovers. Dexter posted 10 shots, eight shots on net and eight ground balls for the Monks, while Megan Mourmouras registered eight ground balls and five caused turnovers.

Saint Joseph's went 14 of 17 on clears and Lasell finished 13 for 17. The Monks scored three man-up goals and held a 41-11 advantage in shots. The Monks led the ground-balls category, 39-26.

The Lasers will compete in a non-conference game against Mitchell Thursday at 4 p.m. on Grellier Field.
