Women's Lacrosse: Brady, Kessner and Chapdelaine star in 12-10 loss to Salem State

NEWTON, Mass. - Sydney Brady, Teresa Kessner and Emily Chapdelaine combined for eight goals and six assists for the Lasell University women's lacrosse team during a 12-10 non-conference setback to Salem State Wednesday on a snowy afternoon at Grellier Field.

Brady finished with four goals and one assist for the Lasers (0-2, 0-1 GNAC), while Chapdelaine tied career-highs with three goals and four points, to go along with one assist. Kessner tied personal-bests with four assists and five points, to go along with one goal. Senior goalie Devin Zambruno tallied a game-high 10 saves for Lasell.

"It was a tough loss since we were shooting goal for goal most of the game, but we are definitely finding our rhythm," said Lasell University Women's Lacrosse Head Coach Britney Wuorio. "I am hopeful a few adjustments will help us for the next game."

Taylor Sujko (3 goals, 1 assist), Kaia Hollingsworth (3 goals) and Madelynn Plourde (3 goals) led the way for the Vikings (2-1). Goalie Sydney Franz earned the win, turning aside nine shots.

After falling behind, 3-0, Lasell scored three consecutive goals to end the first quarter, with two by Brady and one from Chapdelaine. Salem State scored the first two goals of the second quarter, but the Lasers knotted the game at 5-5 going into halftime. Sophia Gadsden and Chapdelaine scored in the period, with both tallies being assisted by Kessner.

"We played really well today given the conditions," said Brady. "The team showed a lot of resiliency and it was nice to see us play for each other."

A goal by Courtney Sobolewski, assisted by Brady, evened the score at 8-8 with 3:34 remaining in the third. Mackenzie Schmink scored in the final minute, giving the visitors a 9-8 advantage going into the final 15 minutes.

The Vikings expanded their lead to 11-8 in the fourth, and then Brady and Chapdelaine found the back of the net for the hosts, cutting the deficit down to one with 1:51 left. A goal by Plourde gave Salem State some breathing room at 12-10 with 1:16 on the scoreboard.

Kessner grabbed a career-high and game-leading 10 ground balls. Chapdelaine (8), Gadsden (7), Natalia Cullen (6), Shannon Borbee (6) and Brady (6) also excelled in picking up ground balls. Lasell led the category, 52-40. Brady compiled game-highs of eight shots and seven on net. Chapdelaine posted a personal-best and game-high four caused turnovers. Salem State held a 26-25 advantage in shots.

The Lasers will compete against Saint Joseph (Conn.) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Saturday at noon in West Hartford, Connecticut.
