WLX: Lasell wins GNAC opener over Colby-Sawyer; McComb tops Lasers with eight goals

NEWTON, Mass. – Senior Jordan McComb (Cumberland, R.I.) scored eight goals and collected eight draw controls and four ground balls Saturday afternoon to lead Lasell University past Colby-Sawyer College, 16-10, in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse opener for both schools at Grellier Field.

Lasell improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while Colby-Sawyer drops to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the GNAC.

Senior Chloe Shugrue (Worcester, Mass.) added six points for the Lasers with a goal and five assists, as well as four draw controls. Three other Lasers scored two goals apiece, senior Kaeli Leddy (South Portland, Maine), sophomore Erin Kriger (Burlington, Mass.) and freshman Emily Chapdelaine (East Longmeadow, Mass.). Kriger also chipped in with seven draw controls.

Colby-Sawyer was led by a four-goal performance from Sarah Morin. Jess Tattersall added a pair of goals, while Allison Piracini contributed a goal and two assists. 

Senior Morgan Choquet (Cumberland, R.I.) earned the victory in goal for the Lasers with 11 saves. Kailyn Lapham made 10 saves for the Chargers.  

It was a 2-2 score midway through the first half before Lasell outscored the visitors 7-1 over the next 15 minutes to hold a 9-3 lead at the break. McComb had six of her goals in the first half along with one apiece from Kriger, Leddy and Shugrue.

The Lasers outscored the Chargers 6-3 over the first 20 minutes of the second half to pull away to a 15-6 advantage. Colby-Sawyer made a comeback in the final 10 minutes but could not overcome the deficit.

Lasell plays its first road game of the season on Thursday, March 12, at Salem State University at 7 p.m. The Chargers will conclude a four-game road trip at Keene State on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
