WLX: Lasell defeats Norwich in GNAC match-up

NEWTON, Mass. – Senior Jordan McComb (Cumberland, R.I.) tallied six points on five goals and one assist Saturday afternoon as Lasell College defeated Norwich University, 15-6, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse action at Grellier Field.

McComb also collected four draw controls and four ground ball as the Lasers improved to 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the GNAC. Norwich dropped to 5-6 overall and 3-5 in conference play.

Senior Vanessa Pino (Methuen, Mass.) also contributed to the offense with three goals and two assists. Junior Chloe Shugrue (Worcester, Mass.) filled up the stat sheet with four ground balls, three draw controls, three caused turnovers and two goals. Junior Amanda DiLeonardo (West Haven, Conn.) added a team-high five draw controls, and sophomore Kellie Matthews (Walpole, Mass.) was good for four ground balls, three caused turnovers, a goal and an assist.

The Cadets got goals from six different players. Sophomore Emily Schromm (North Attleboro, Mass.) tallied a goal and two assists with a team-high five ground balls, and junior Mary-Kait Mace (Canton, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist.

Norwich scored the first two goals in the first 10 minutes of the game as Schromm assisted on one and scored the other. The Lasers took control with six unanswered goals, including two from Pino, while keeping the Cadets off the scoreboard for the remainder of the half as the hosts led 6-2 at the break.

Lasell scored three of the first four goals through the midway point of the second half to move ahead 9-3, and later added four goals in a row to extend the lead to 13-5. McComb and DiLeonardo tacked on goals in the final two minutes for the 15-6 final.

The Lasers led the battle of draws (16-6) and shots (41-26). The teams were tied in ground balls (22-22) and turnovers (17-17).

Senior Morgan Choquet (Woonsocket, R.I.) earned the win over Lasell with 10 saves on 16 shots. Lawson Hayes (Moorestown, N.J.) had a strong game in the Cadet goal, finishing with 11 saves.

The Lasers are back in action on Wednesday, April 10, when they visit Simmons University for a GNAC match-up at 7 p.m. Norwich returns home to host Emmanuel College in a GNAC contest Wednesday at 7 p.m.
