Women's Lacrosse Can't Come Back Against Monks; Fall Short 12-11

NEWTON, Mass. (4/14/16) – The Lasell women's lacrosse team fell short to St. Joe's Maine, 12-11, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action Thursday afternoon at Grellier Field. The Lasers dip to 2-2 in the conference and 6-5 overall, while the Monks remain perfect in the GNAC, 4-0, and improve to 10-2 this season.

Sophomore Taylor Yandow (Moretown, Vt.) netted five goals in the effort with a game-high eight draw controls and three additional ground balls. Senior Bridget Munnelly (Bellingham, Mass.) tossed in a pair of goals, while classmates Ashlee Pechulis (Westfield, Mass.), Bridget Doherty and Taylor Dooley (Barnstable, Mass.) found the back of the net once in the setback.

Senior Kat Gadbois (Scarborough, Maine) tied Yandow with a game-high five goals while dishing out two assists in the victory. Junior Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) added two markers, while sophomore Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine) added a single tally, an assist, and five draw controls.

The Lasers got off to a hot start, leading the Monks early, 4-2, via Yandow, Pechulis, and Doherty. Gadbois netted a free position shot at 9:44 to squash the gap to one, 4-3, before Caiazzo finished on a free position of her own for the 4-4 equalizer. With 11:26 left in the first half, St. Joe's ignited a 4-1 stretch when junior Jackie Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.) found Dumond on a cut to the crease.

With 11:09 left on the clock, Dumond lined up for a free position shot where junior keeper Bridget Delaney (Weymouth, Mass.) shot up with an initial save, but Dumond grabbed rebound and put away the Monks' last goal of the game. Lasell executed a late game rally, scoring four unanswered goals on St. Joe's. In a five-minute span, the Lasers cut the deficit to a single point, 12-11, after Doherty found Munnelly with 4:04 left in regulation.  Dooley nearly netted the equalizer on a free position shot with 1:40 left, but the ding of the ball smashing off the pipe left the game for a 12-11 final.

Junior Brooke Bergeron (Lynn, Mass.) suffered the loss in net for the Lasers, saving three shots in 30 minutes played, while Delaney stopped four shots in second half relief. Senior keeper Michelle Cunha (Enfield, Conn.) earned the win in the cage for the Monks with 14 saves.

Both teams return to GNAC road action on Saturday, April 16.  The Lasers will face off with St. Joe's (Conn.) for a 1:00 p.m. start, while the Monks face Norwich University at 4:00 p.m.
