Women's Lacrosse Downs Curry 9-6 in Season Debut

MILTON, Mass. – The Lasell College women's lacrosse team is 1-0 after defeating Curry College 9-6 on Tuesday afternoon at the Walter M. Katz Field in the 2016 season opener.

Lasell was led by senior Tayler Dooley (Barnstable, Mass.) who had two goals and a helper for three points and sophomore Taylor Yandow (Moretown, Vt.) who also had three points on a tally and two assists.

Junior Kelly Parker (Branford, Conn.) led the Colonels in points with three on two goals and an assist. Junior Malorie Knowlton (Norfolk, Mass.) finished with two points on two tallies.  Senior Alexis Cran ((Branford, Conn.) led the team in draw controls with four, ground balls with five and caused turnovers with four.

Curry jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just 1:56 into the game when Parker sent junior Lauren Carroll (Providence, R.I.) for her lone goal on the day.  Knowlton extended the early lead to two just three minutes later as she carried the ball all alone for the unassisted tally.  Lasell went on a three goal spree in a two-minute span, the first beng 14 seconds after Knowlton's.  The Lasers then won the draw and freshman Riley Musial (Clinton, Conn.) earned her first collegiate goal.  Senior Ashlee Pechulis (Westfield, Mass.) followed only 15 seconds later on her own unassisted goal to tie the game.  Freshman Jordan McComb (Cumberland, R.I.) netted her first collegiate score at the 23:29 minute mark off a feed from Yandow to take the lead for the first time during the contest.

With 7:13 showing on the clock the teams traded goals with the Colonels firing one in first.  Knowlton netted her second off an assist from senior Hanna Peper (Wayland, Mass.).  The Lasers answered back two minutes later after senior Bridget Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) sent sophomore Danielle Chambrelli (Cheshire, Conn.) for the 4-3 bump.  Junior Rachael Lawrence (Hanover, Mass.) tied the score at 4-4 after rolling the crease.  Lasell however regained the lead with 1:42 left in the period to head into halftime up, 5-4.

The Colonels came out strong to start the second period as they netted back-to-back goals to take back a one goal advantage.  Parker netted the first unassisted and her second off an assist from senior goalie Annie Douglas (Manchester, N.H.).  Douglas made a save and cleared the ball to the 50 yard-line, to where Parker made the catch and ran straight to net without having to dodge a defender.  Unfortunately those would be the last tallies Curry would get as Lasell scored four goals in the final 16 minutes for the 9-6 win.

The Lasers' junior goalkeeper, Bridget Delaney (Weymouth, Mass.) played in net for the first half making two stops before giving way to classmate Brooke Bergeron (Swampscott, Mass.) who made  one save in the second half, earning the win for the visitors. Douglas recorded nine saves in net for the Colonels.

Lasell plays next on Saturday, March 5 when they travel to Emerson College for a 1:00 p.m. game time. Curry is next in action when they travel to Salem State on Thursday, March 10 at 4:00 p.m.
