Women's Lacrosse Drops 13-12 Overtime Decision to Emerson

NEWTON, Mass. (4/11/45) – Lasell College women's lacrosse fell short to Emerson College 13-12 in an overtime non-conference battle Saturday afternoon at Grellier Field. The loss sets the Lasers back to 7-5 overall, while the Lions climb to 7-4 this spring.

Prior to today's contest, Lasell College honored its seven graduating seniors. Toni Minelli (Newington, Conn.), April Canavan (Stonington, Conn.), Bri Daley (Watertown, Conn.), Abbi Scrutchfield (Portland, Maine), Caitlyn Brecher (Cheshire, Conn.), Michaela Dougty (Scituate, Mass.), and Alexa Katsigianis (Amherst, N.H.) have each made outstanding contributions to the Lasell College women's lacrosse program, and we wish them well in their future endeavors.

Brecher paced the Lasers with a game-high five goals, while junior Bridget Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) registered her sixth hat-trick of the season. Freshmen Taylor Yandow (Moretown, Vt.) and Danielle Chambrelli (Cheshire, Conn), junior Ashlee Pechulis (Westfield, Mass), and Minelli each tallied a single marker for the Lasers in the loss.

Sophomore Meredith Weber (West Caldwell, N.J.) scored four goals and won six draw controls to lead the Lions to the victory, while junior Kate Lemire (Scituate, Mass.) registered a hat-trick and two assists. Freshman Tara Windsor (Palm City, Fla.) and junior Tayllar Righini (Salem, N.H.) finished with a pair of goals apiece, while junior Maggie Sheetz (Topsfield, Mass.) and junior Guerin Morissette (Georgetown, Mass.) collected single goals in the win.

After the two teams traded a pair of goals in the opening stanza, the Lasers went on a 5-1 run to lead the Lions with 8:41 to go. Brecher found the back of the cage on a feed from junior Stefanie Welch (Hancock, N.H.), before the visitors answered with a run of their own. Weber and Lemire traded off goals, the last one coming at 2:22, to even the score at 7-7.

Lemire and Weber teamed up once more for the opening goals of the second stanza, before Brecher capitalized on the man-up opportunity, cutting the deficit by one, 9-8. Pechulis scored the equalizer after a rocket to net on a free position attempt before Brecher netted the go-ahead goal via a pass from Doherty (10-9). Doherty extended the Lasers' lead to 11, but the hosts' run was answered by back-to-back goals from Morissette and Righini to knot the score again, 11-11.

With 9:28 left in regulation, Canavan collected the possession from the draw, where Chambrelli finished a pass from Minelli to put the Lasers up 12-11. After seven minutes of scoreless play, Sheetz forced the overtime period with a man-down goal to tie the game for one last time.

The Lions were quick to score in overtime, netting their 13th and final goal of the day 1:06 into the period from a free position shot from Windsor. With 31 seconds left to play, the Lasers were given the free position shot, but were unlucky on the attempt as the ball ricocheted off the post to give the visitors the 13-12 overtime decision.

The Lasers held the 15-13 advantage in ground ball pickups, while the Lions outshot the hosts 28-26. Both teams were 2-for-6 in free position shots, and shared an equal 16 turnovers.

Katsigianis (7-5) saved 11 of 24 shots faced on net, while junior keeper Victoria Kanaris (Haworth, N.J.) earned her fourth win of the season (4-3) with eight saves of 20 on frame.

The Lasers will host Johnson and Wales University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match up on Monday, April 13 at 4:00 p.m., while the Lions welcome Wellesley College on Wednesday, April 15 for a 6:00 p.m. start.
