Women's Lacrosse Drops Rivier, 18-9

NEWTON, Mass. (4/8/14) – The Lasell College women's lacrosse team won their second straight game, defeating Rivier University 18-9 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Grellier Field. The Lasers improved to 7-5 on the season and 5-2 in league play, while Rivier slipped to 6-5 overall and 4-3 in conference contests.

Britney Wuorio (Bolton, Mass.) posted her third double digit point outing of the season, scoring six goals and handing out four assists to finish with 10 points. Ashlee Pechulis (Westfield, Mass.) found the back of the net five times for the Lasers and Bridget Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) scored a pair of goals in the victory. Alexa Katsigianis (Amherst, N.H.) made five saves to earn the victory in goal for Lasell, her seventh win of the season.

Amanda Wickens (Tyngsboro, Mass.) tallied a team-high four goals and added an assist for Rivier, Jessica Amaral (E. Providence, R.I.) scored a pair of goals and tacked on an assist and Hannah Wyatt (Merrimack, N.H.) scored one and assisted on another goal for the Raiders. Danielle Moran (San Diego, Calif.) made 10 saves in the loss for Rivier, including nine in the first half.

Lasell jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the game's opening 12 and a half minutes, starting their run on a goal by Toni Minelli (Newington, Conn.) from Wuorio, followed by tallies from Bridget Doherty and Ashlee Pechulis before a pair of Wuorio finished completed the run. Amanda Wickens got the Raiders on the board with a goal at the 15:50 mark, but two more goals from Wuorio pushed the Lasell lead to 7-1 with 10 minutes left in the half. Rivier steadied, closing the half on a 3-1 run to keep things close with Lasell holding an 8-4 edge at the half.

Lasell scored twice in the opening minutes of the second half to take a 10-4 lead on goals by Caitlyn Brecher (Cheshire, Conn.) and Pechulis. And after an Amaral goal for Rivier, Pechulis scored two more to make it a 12-5 lead for the hosts. Wickens scored on a free position shot then added another on a nifty finish in front of the cage to cut the Raiders deficit to 12-7. Wuorio and Lisi Anczok (Buffalo, N.Y.) each netted unassisted goals for Lasell to push their lead back to 14-7 and the Lasers outscored Rivier 4-2 over the final 16 minutes to produce the 18-9 final score.

Lasell used a 21-8 advantage on groundballs while Rivier committed 23 turnovers to only 11 for Lasell and the Lasers outshot the Raiders 38-15 on the afternoon.

Rivier will head to in-state foe New England College on Friday April 11th for a non-conference tilt before resuming GNAC play with a home date against St. Joseph's College of Maine on Sunday April 13th. Lasell will be on the road for their next three games, beginning with a Saturday April 12th meeting with GNAC leading Emmanuel College.
