Wellesley Stops Women's Lacrosse 14-10 in Non-League Action

NEWTON, Mass. (3/8/14) – The Lasell College women's lacrosse team fell 1410 at home to Wellesley College on Saturday afternoon at Grellier Field. The loss drops Lasell to 1-2 on the season while Wellesley improves to 1-2 with the victory.

Caitlyn Brecher (Cheshire, Conn.) scored a game-high five goals for Lasell and Britney Wuorio (Bolton, Mass.) notched a pair of goals and four assists. Bridget Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) added a goal and an assist for the Lasers while Lisi Anczok (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Toni Minnelli (Newington, Conn.) each scored one in the game. Alexa Katsigianis (Amherst, N.H.) made 13 saves for the Lasers while taking the loss in goal.

Nikki Sharkin (Summit, N.J.) and Brit Mscisz (Topsfield, Mass.) each scored four goals and Mscisz also added an assist.  Claire Canty (East Rockaway, N.Y.) netted two goals and two assists for Wellesley while grabbing a game-high nine draw controls and Chelsey Hooker (Cypress, Tex.) scored twice. Wendy Nettleton (La Jolla, Calif.) made nine saves in the game to notch her first win of the season in goal.

Wellesley opened the scoring with a pair of free position shots in the opening five minutes from Meghan Peterson (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Sharkey to take a 2-0 lead. Minelli scored on a pass from Wuorio and then Wuorio converted a free position shot tying the game at 2-2. Lasell went in front 3-2 when Anczok converted a feed from Wuorio but three straight from Wellesley gave the visitors a 5-3 lead with just over 13 minutes remaining. Brecher scored her first of the game to cut the hosts deficit to 5-4, but Wellesley closed the half with three straight goals to take an 8-4 lead into intermission.

Goals by the Lasers Brecher and Wuorio sandwiched around a pair from Wellesley left the hosts trailing 10-6 with 13:52 remaining. A goal from Sharkey for Wellesley left Lasell trailing 11-6 with 11 minutes left, but the Lasers wouldn't go away. A goal by Doherty sparked a Lasell run and when Brecher scored twice less than a minute apart Lasell had cut the deficit to 11-9 with 5:17 left to play. Mscisz scored twice in the final four and a half minutes as Wellesley closed out Lasell with a 14-10 final.

Wellesley will host Plymouth State on Wednesday March 12th at 4:00 p.m. and Lasell will return to action on Wednesday March 12th at Bridgewater State at 4:00 p.m.
