Women's Lacrosse Wins 2OT Thriller 17-16 at Curry

MILTON, Mass. (3/6/14) - The Lasell College women's lacrosse team won a 17-16 double overtime contest at Curry College on Thursday evening on a Britney Wuorio goal in sudden-death. The Lasers improved to 1-1 with the victory while Curry dropped to 1-2 on the season. 

Caitlyn Brecher finished with five goals for Lasell and Britney Wuorio added four goals and an assist. Ashley Gleason scored her first career goal, finishing with two goals and an assist along with four grounballs, Bridget Doherty chipped in two goals and an assist and Ashlee Pechulis netted a pair as well. Lisi Anczokhelped the Lasers control the midfield, grabbing five draw controls and four groundballs while causing six turnovers and adding a goal. Alexa Katsigianis made 13 saves and limited Curry to a 2-13 perfromance on free position shots to earn the victory in goal for Lasell.

The Colonels were led offensively by senior Haley Carey (New Milford, Mass.) who finished with six points on five goals and an assist.  Defensively, senior Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, Mass.) had a solid effort causing five turnovers, picking up 11 out of the teams 24 draw control wins and scooping up seven ground balls while also netting two goals. 

Brecher opened the scoring for Lasell in the 7th minute of play, scoring on a pass from Gleason and Curry responded with a goal two and a half minute later to tie the score at 1-1. Lasell then went on a tear, scoring five unanswered goals to take a 6-1 lead using three tallies from Brecher in the run. Curry scored twice, thirty seconds apart to cut the visitors lead to 6-3 with just over eight minutes left in the half, and each team recorded two more goals heading into the half with Lasell holding an 8-5 lead.

Lasell scored five of the first six goals of the second half incresing their lead to 13-6 on a Wuorio free position shot with 19:40 remaining in the game. Curry again netted a pair of goals to stop the Lasers run, and when Ashlee Pechulis scored with 9:18 to play the vsiiting Lasers lead 14-8. 

Curry wouldn't concede however, scoring five times in a three minute and forty second span to cut the Lasell lead to 14-13 with 5:40 left. Brecher scored her final goal of the game with just over five minutes remaining to give Lasell a two-goal cushion but Curry would use a pair of Haley Carey goals, the last on with 34 seconds to play to force extra-time.

Wuorio scored with two minutes left in the first overtime but Curry would again rely on some last second heroics as Deanna Monfredo forced sudden-death overtime with a goal with 18 seconds to play. Lasell took the opening draw of the second overtime and Wuorio's winner found the back of the net to give the Lasers their first win of the 2014 season.

Lasell will host Wellesley College on Saturday March 8th at 12:00 p.m.
