Lasell Moves Past Mount Ida into GNAC Women’s Lacrosse Semifinals

Newton, Mass. (4/24/13) – The Lasell College women's lacrosse team advanced to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference semifinals by defeating Mount Ida, 20-8 in Wednesday's quarterfinal matchup. Lasell improved to 13-3 overall with the victory, while the Mustangs wrapped up their 2013 campaign with a 5-11 record.

Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, Mass.) scored a game-high five goals and added one assist to pace the Lasell attack, Britney Wuorio (Bolton, Mass.) tallied four goals and two assists, and Bridget Doherty (Franklin, Mass.) netted four goals and added one assist for the Lasers. Caitlyn Brecher (Cheshire, Conn.) found the back of the net three times and handed out a pair of assists, freshmen Bridget Munnelly (Bellingham, Mass.) notched a career-high five points with two goals and three assists and Bridget Ryan (Chatham, N.J.) came on two score twice in the victory. Sammy Long (Staten Island, N.Y.) made four saves in the cage to earn the victory for Lasell.

Amanda Bowen (Randolph, Vt.) paced the Mustangs attack with three goals, Alexandria Milot (Tiverton, R.I.) chipped in with two goals and one assist, Maile Melvin (Hebron, Conn.) scored twice and Kaitlyn Affhauser (Cheshire, Mass.) added a goal and an assist. Kayla Musty (Topsham, Mass.) made six saves while taking the loss in goal for Mount Ida.

Lasell opened with the first seven goals of the game, two by Wuorio and three by Slattery to take a 7-0 lead with 16:40 left in the first half. Amanda Bowen got the Mustangs on the board with an unassisted goal  with 14:19 left in the half, but the Lasers continued the early offensive outburst by outscoring the visitors 6-1 to close out the half and take a 13-2 lead into intermission.

Lasell outshot Mount Ida 21-5 through the opening 30 minutes of action, holding a 10-4 edge in draw controls and a 13-8 advantage in groundballs.

Bowen and Melvin tallied back-to-back goals to open the second half for Mount Ida cutting the Lasell lead to 13-4, but Lasell quashed the comeback with the game's four goals to take a 17-4 lead with 17:40 remaining in the game. Mount Ida continued to battle, out-scoring Lasell 4-3 over the game's final 17 minutes but it was not enough as Lasell advanced with the 20-8 victory.

Lasell will host St. Joseph's College of Maine on Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in the GNAC semifinal round.
