Second Half Surge Propels Lasell Past Emmanuel in Women’s Lacrosse

Newton, Mass. (3/23/13) – The Lasell College women's lacrosse team scored nine consecutive goals to open the second half to break open a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match-up against Emmanuel College to defeat the visiting Saints 21-9. Lasell improved to 5-2 on the season and 2-0 in GNAC action while Emmanuel fell to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Britney Wuorio (Bolton, Mass.) scored six goals and added four assists to help lead the Lasers offense, and Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, Mass.) scored a pair of goals while handing out six assists. Rebecca Stanton (Agawam, Mass.) and Ashlee Pechulis (Westfield, Mass.) each found the back of the net four times for Lasell and Caitlyn Brecher (Cheshire, Conn.) tallied a trio of goals for Lasell.

Kristen Tuleja (Mansfield, Mass.) recorded a hat-trick for Emmanuel, adding a pair of assists, and Sarah Wootten (Berlin, Md.) finished with a trio of goals as well. Madeline Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) chipped in with a goal and two assists while grabbing four draw controls and four ground balls for the Saints.

Lasell opened the contest with three goals in the first five minutes, but Emmanuel's Wootten kept the Saints close with a pair of goals a minute apart to make the score 3-2 with 21:28 remaining in the opening half. The two teams traded goals over the next several minutes with Lasell's Brecher putting Lasell ahead 7-5 with 7:42 left in the first half. Consecutive goals for Emmanuel by Leahy and Wootten drew the visitors' level at 7-7 with just under five minutes before the half before the Lasers' Slattery sent her side into the half with the lead on a goal with 1:16 on the clock.

Britney Wuorio netted a pair of goals in the first four minutes of the second half to jumpstart the decisive 9-0 run that pushed the game out of reach. Wuorio scored five goals in the run, and Ashlee Pechulis chipped in a pair, helping Lasell turn an 8-7 game into a 17-7 game with 14:40 left in the game. Tuleja scored an unassisted goal for Emmanuel to stop the run and cut the margin to 17-8, but Emmanuel could draw no closer as Lasell scored four of the last five goals to collect the 21-9 victory.

Sammy Long (Staten Island, N.Y.) made eight saves to earn the win in net for Lasell, while Lauren White (Lynnfield, Mass.) stopped eight shots while taking the loss on goal for Emmanuel.

The Saints will host the Raptors of Bard College in Monday Mar. 25th at 7:00 p.m. while Lasell will host Norwich University at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday Mar. 27th.
