Caren Fires in Game-Winner with Five Second Left as Lasers Hand Anchorwomen First Loss

PROVIDENCE, RI- Chelsea Caren (Redding, CT) fired in the game-winning goal to break a 9-9 deadlock with just five seconds left in regulation to allow the Lasell College women's lacrosse team to hand Rhode Island College their first loss of the 2011 season.

Lasell went ahead 4-1 through the 23rd minute of the first and held onto a 6-3 lead through the intermission.  After the break, Rhode Island pulled together a 4-1 run to knot the score at 7-all with 17 minutes to go, then took their first lead of the game with exactly 15 minutes left to play.  The Anchorwomen added an insurance goal with 11:56 to go, but Lasell's Ashley Slattery (Weymouth, MA) and Neila Kudla (Groton, MA) answered Rhode Island's two goal stretch with their second and third goals, respectively, to tie the score at nine-all, with 3:45 left to play.

After 3:40 of a tie game, and the threat of overtime impending, Caren chose an auspicious moment to score her first goal of the game, wrapping from behind the cage to drill the game-winner with just five seconds on the clock to produce the Lasers' 10-9 victory.

Caren finished the day with two points, having previously assisted on Slattery's second mark of the afternoon. Slattery also notched two points in Lasell's second win of the year, adding five ground balls and three draw controls.

Freshman Britney Wuorio (Bolton, MA) and Kudla secured three goals each, and combined for five ground balls and three draw controls.  Rebecca Stanton (Agawam, MA) chipped in with one goal and Kelsey Conroy (Marshfield, MA) added one assist.

Kristin Coderre (Monson, MA) picked up 15 saves in net for Lasell, turning aside nine shots in the first half and six in the second.

Rhode Island College junior attacker Molly Voyer (Lincoln, RI) joined Nicky Drolet (Somersworth, NH) with a team-high two goals, including a game-tying free position shot with 16:47 remaining. Taryn Carbone (Cranston, RI) made nine stops in the Anchorwomen's net.

Lasell (2-3) returns home on Saturday, March 26th for a noon start against Norwich University in their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest of the season.
