Westfield Edges Lasell in Overtime

Newton, Mass.-  Caitlyn Murphy (Katonah, NY) and Tina Canavan (Stonington, Conn.) each scored seven goals for Lasell but it was the Westfield State women's lacrosse team that edged the Lasers out 21-18 in overtime. 

 

Murphy attacked at 26:59 to put the Lasers up by one, with an assist from Chelsea Caren (Redding, Conn.).  Westfield's Laura Chiricosta (Lexington, Mass.) tied it up with a dish from Ally Brown (Andover, Mass.) just twenty seconds later.  The teams went back and forth goal-for-goal up until with less than six minutes left in the half the Lasers netted goals by Erika McGrath (Saco, ME), Meredith Hessler (Middletown, RI) and two by Canavan to go up 9-5 at the break.

 

Upon return to play, the Owls closed in on the Lasers lead by scoring three goals right off the bat, while down a player due to a penalty, with Rachel Dionne (Feeding Hills, Mass.), Chiricosta, and Kaitlin Welsh (Wilbraham, Mass.) each putting in goals.  The owls tied the game up at 11-all when Brown scored on an unassisted shot.

 

For the remainder of the period, the teams traded goals, climaxing in a 17-all regulation tie.

 

In overtime, Westfield's Nicole Dipilato (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Dionne donned goals to go ahead, with Dionne's proving to be the game winner.  Lasell's McGrath scored with 33 seconds left in the first overtime period, but that was the final Laser tally of the game.  Two more Owls scored in the second overtime period, concluding the game with a 21-18 Owl victory.

 

Dionne marked a game-high 10 points on seven goals and 2 assists for the visitors.  Chiricosta added six goals and Brown ended the day with five points while also picking up four draw controls.

 

Canavan had a Lasell-best eight points in the contest, adding one assist to her seven scores.  Canavan also took a game-best eight draw controls in the contest.  McGrath and Caren each tallied three points, and Hessler controlled five ground balls, six draw controls, and caused two turnovers.

 

Lasell's sophomore goalkeeper Kristin Coderre (Monson, Mass.) picked up 15 saves in the defeat.

 

The Lasers travel to Nichols College on Thursday, March 12th for their third non-conference season game.  Game time is 4:00 p.m.
