Lasers Streak By Simmons in GNAC Opener

The Lasell College women's lacrosse team was led once again by Caitlyn Murphy (Katonah, NY) who scored five goals and assisted another to notch 6 points for the Lasers en route to their first conference win of the 2009 season against Simmons College.   The Lasers overpowered the first year program 18-11, and made their way to their third consecutive win.  Lasell is now an even 3-3 on the year, while Simmons falls to 0-2.

The Sharks were the first to score in the contest as Natalie Stever (Chagrin Falls, OH) put one past Lasell's goalie Kristin Coderre (Monson, Mass.) just 39 seconds into the contest.  Lasell's freshman midfielder Lexi Giatrelis (Mashpee, Mass.) put the Lasers back on top after firing in the next two goals of the game.  Muphy gave the Lasers a cushion of a third goal just under ten minutes in.

The Sharks were determined to stay within the reach of the Lasers though as Natalie  West (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and Stever each put in another tally to tie the game at 3-all, then Mariel Friedman (Cincinatti, OH) put in the go-ahead goal for Simmons with fifteen minutes elapsed.  The teams tied up the score two more times heading into the break at a 7-7 stalemate.

The Lasers scored three times to open the second half, marking the fourth lead change of the game. The Sharks came back to tie the game once more at 10-all, with 24:42 remaining in the contest, but Lasell took over from that point on.

Murphy scored on a penalty shot, followed by Tina Canavan (Stonington, Conn.) scoring the game winner with twenty minutes to go.  Simmons final goal was scored by Stever, who finished with four total goals in the game, and Lasell ran away with six more marks before the final whistle.

Murphy attacked once more, and Canavan added two more goals for a combined 10 points between them.  Meredith Hessler (Middletown, RI) fired in her second goal and Kendall Barreiro (Ossining, NY) scored twice in the final ten minutes.

Coderre finished with 16 saves in the net for Lasell.  Hessler added five ground balls and three draw controls to the mix.

Lasell is back in action on Wednesday when they take on Emerson College on Grellier Field at 3:30 p.m.
