After starting 0-3 the Lasers women's lacrosse team has pushed their record to 5-4 with a solid road win on Monday. Lasell defeated Rhode Island College 11-8, due in large part to senior Caitlyn Murphy (Katonah, NY) and sophomore Tina Canavan (Stonington, CT).
Murphy scored five goals and Canavan scored four goals to go along with two assists. Lasell jumped out to a quick lead when Canavan found the back of the net 52 seconds into the first half. The Lasers capitalized on that early momentum scoring six goals in the first 20 minutes to lead 6-0 with 10 minutes to go in the half.
Rhode Island College (1-5) freshman Molly Voyer scored three
times over the final 10 minutes to pull RIC within four, 7-3, at
the break.
Murphy came out firing in the 2nd half scoring two quick
goals but the Anchorwomen answered with three of the next four
goals, all scored by senior Jessica Shiel. Voyer closed the gap to
two with 4:50, but Canavan answered quickly and secured the Lasers
11-8 victory. Also scoring for Lasell was Andrea Ward
(Hingham, MA) and Jenna Stitt (Auburn,
NH). Chelsea Caren (Redding, CT)
pitched in with an assist as well.
Kristin Coderre (Monson, MA) was huge for Lasell,
making 18 saves, which included 10 second-half stops that kept the
lead for the Lasers. Sophomore Hilary Switzer made five saves in a
losing effort for Rhode Island College.
Lasell senior defender Cassandra Haase (Ridgewood,
NJ) contributed a game-high nine caused turnovers and nine
ground balls.
The Lasers continue non-conference play on Wednesday, April
1st at Elms College, at 7:00 p.m.
