Lasers Rally for Comeback but fall to Rams in Overtime

Framingham, Mass.-  The Lasell College women's lacrosse team was behind by as much as six goals in the first period of play before rallying to come back, tying the game with just 54 seconds remaining to force overtime.  Kendall Bareirro (Ossining, NY) scored the last two regulation goals for the Lasers in the final two minutes to cause the extra stanza, but it was the Framingham State Rams who concluded as the victors, 15-13.

 

Framingham State got the early lead, pushing ahead 7-2 by the 21st minute in the half.  Andrea Ward (Hingham, Mass.) was the first Laser to find the net as Caitlyn Murphy (Katonah, NY) sent Ward a pass through the middle to tie the game at 1-all.  The Lasers did not score again for over nine minutes when GNAC Rookie of the Week Lexi Giatrelis (Mashpee, Mass.) was once again set up by Murphy and tallied the Lasers second mark of the day.

 

By 20:51 the Lasers were in a 7-2 deficit, at which point Valentina Hernandez (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) notched her first points of the game unassisted. 

 

The biggest gap came at 29:12 in the first when the Rams notched their ninth goal and the Lasers went down by six.  A final goal by Murphy before the break gave Framingham a 9-4 halftime lead.

 

Murphy scored just fifteen seconds into the second to begin the battle back for Lasell.  Meredith Hessler (Middletown, RI) made her first score of the game just two minutes later. 

 

Lasell held the Rams to only three second half goals as they inched their way back into the contest.  Murphy score twice more and with a goal apiece by both Tina Canavan (Stonington, Conn.) and Chelsea Caren (Redding, Conn.) the Lasers found themselves down just 12-10 with 2:55 remaining.

 

Enter Bareirro's back-to-back pair, both scored unassisted to even out the contest. 

 

Though the Rams scored first in the overtime frame, Lasell leveled the score with another Canavan count.  Stephanie Corrales gave Framingham their game winner at 64:34, and cushioned that just 12 seconds later leaving the Lasers behind 15-13.

 

Lasell's Kristin Coderre (Monson, Mass.) played all 66 minutes in the net and collected 23 saves in the defeat.

 

In addition to her three points, Canavan also added six draw controls and four groundballs.  Cassandra Haase (Ridgewood, NJ) also picked up an impressive five ground balls and caused four turnovers on defense.

 

Lasell returns home on Thursday, April 16th to face the Becker College Hawks in non-conference lacrosse action.  Game time is slated for 4:00 on Grellier Field.
