Women’s Lax Flies by Hawks

Newton, MA- Caitlyn Murphy (Katonah, NY) had an incredible ten points for the Lasell College women's lacrosse team, scoring eight goals and adding two assists, leading the Lasers past Becker College, 23-19. The teams settled into a halftime tie before the Lasers caught fire to lead the entire second half.  The Lasers record advances to 8-6 after their non-conference win, while the Hawks even out at 7-7.

Kendall Bareirro (Ossining, NY) scored off the original draw control within the first fifteen seconds of the game to give Lasell a quick 1-0 lead.  The Hawks answered as Morgan Hazen (Woodstock, VT) rolled around the crease to net Becker's tying goal.

The Lasers then went on a four goal run, started by Murphy who connected on a free possession shot, followed by Lexi Giatrelis (Mashpee, Mass.) wheeling down field in a 1 v. 1 situation to drill a low shot past Nicole Kosinski (Westport, Conn.) in the Hawk's net.  Bareirro made contact with the back of the goal again dodging through traffic to give Lasell a 5-1 edge.

Hazen's second tally of the game broke up the Lasers streak, and Renee Landry (Acton, ME) closed the Hawks to within two goals, at 19:49.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, Murphy scored once more, followed by Tina Canavan (Stonington, Conn.) traveling the length of the field to launch her first goal of the contest, keeping the Lasers in comfortable lead.

Over the course of the next couple minutes, Tammy Mullen (Pottstown, Penn.) scored for Becker and April McGrath (Willow Grove, Penn.) made a quick cut through the middle taking a cross crease pass from Murphy to mark the Lasers 8th goal.

After winning the ensuing draw, Hazen took the draw and proceeded from the half field point to close the gap between the teams to just two goals again, at 7-5. Mullen returned to action once again bringing the Hawks within just one goal of Lasell after a penalty shot in the 11th minute.

Giatrelis sent a long pass downfield to Andrea Ward (Hingham, Mass.) to put distance between the teams once again, and Murphy's third tally of the match cushioned their lead further, at 10-6.

Lasell's Ariel Walmark (West Hartford, Conn.) positioned herself well to take a pass from Meredith Hessler (Middletown, RI) and was wide open for the score, which proved to be the last Laser mark for over eight minutes.

Two more goals each from Hazen and Mullen moved the Hawks within reach of the advantage, just one goal behind, at 11-10, with 6:14 on the clock.

At 4:28 in the first half, Hazen scored her 6th goal unassisted weaving through the defense and shooting high by Lasell's goalie Kristin Coderre (Monson, Mass.).

A successful attempt by Landry gave Becker their first lead of the game with 1:03 remaining in the half.

Murphy caused the third tie with just 27 seconds on left in the half, taking a perfect pass from Erika McGrath shooting in the lower left corner of the net.  The Hawks had the final attempt to take back the lead with a last second free possession attempt but were unsuccessful.  The half ended in a 12-all stalemate.

Lasell took control right off the bat in the second half, taking possession of the draw which led to a Ward connection from Hessler, pulling Lasell into the lead once again.  Canavan found Chelsea Caren (Redding, Conn.) in front of the Hawks net in the 25th minute to fire in Lasell's 14th score.

Lasell continued on their pursuit of victory when both Bareirro and Murphy bounced in shots.  By 11:25, the Lasers got in front of the Hawks, 20-12.

With ten minutes remaining in the contest, the Lasers were still the frontrunners of a 21-15 competition.

The Hawks, however, did not give up, as Jennifer Ouellette (Merrimack, NH) and Mullen each put in goals for the visitors.  After some big saves in net by Kosinski, the Hawks capitalized on Lasell turnovers to bring the game within reach.  At 3:10 and 1:57, Mullen put in her 98th and 99th goal of the season to bring score to 21-19.

An important save by Coderre with :54 on the clock resulted in a clear to Cassandra Haase (Ridgewood, NJ) who took off downfield and scored, followed by another Murphy tally, her eighth, with seven seconds on the clock.

Coderre ended the day with 15 saves in the Lasers net and the W.

Kosinski also picked up eleven saves for Becker.  Hazen notched eight total goals in the game, adding an assist, and Mullen finished just one goal shy of her 100th season tally.

Lasell returns to action on Saturday, April 18th at St. Joseph's, Maine for their final regular season game at 1:00 p.m.
