Newton, MA - The Lasell women's basketball team hosted their final regular season home game on Tuesday evening facing the Blue Jays of Saint Joseph (Conn.).
The Lasers who are still fighting for a spot in the GNAC playoffs held a 6-6 conference record coming into the game. Saint Joseph came in at a 9-3 conference record.
The Blue Jays opened the scoring first in the game but the Lasers responded with baskets on back-to-back offensive possessions from Shirle Major and Laura Johnson to give them a 4-2 lead. Both teams swapped leads throughout the first quarter and each team scored on their final offensive possession of the first ten minutes, evening the game at 14-14. In the second quarter, the Blue Jays opened with a 6-0 run making the game 20-14. The Blue Jays eventually mounted a lead of as many as 9 (29-20), before a 6-0 Lasers run cut the Blue Jays lead to just 3. Going into halftime the Lasers trailed 29-33.
Saint Joseph came out strong in the third widening their gap once again up to 8 points on multiple occasions. The Lasers hung in though and kept it within striking distance down by 9 going into the fourth. In the fourth, a Mia Sullivan-Saunders layup pulled the Lasers to within just four points 57-53 with just under five minutes left. Unfortunately for the Lasers, this was as close as they would get with the Blue Jays ending on a strong run, taking a 68-54 road win.
Blaize Mack led the Lasers in scoring with 11 points on the night with Mia Sullivan-Saunders and Shirle Majors following closely behind with 10 points each.
Up Next - The Lasers will play their final regular season contest on the road at Elms College on Saturday.
