Newton, MA - The Lasell women's basketball team hosted the Cadets of Norwich University on Saturday afternoon.
The Lasers who are still fighting for positioning in the GNAC Tournament needed a win on Saturday to keep themselves in playoff contention. Adding to the excitement of the game was the team senior day festivities where seniors Glo Lubunga, Juju Nealy, Mia Sullivan-Saunders, and Jasmine DePina were all recognized.
It was senior Glo Lubunga who opened the scoring for the game getting a jumper to go inside. After this, the Lasers were outscored 14-6 as they found themselves down by two possessions late in the first quarter. A Blaize Mack three-pointer then pulled them back within 3, 14-11 going into the second quarter. After bringing it back to within a point to begin the second, the Lasers would 14-6 the remainder of the quarter seeing them take a 28-19 deficit into the halftime break.
The Cadets started off strong in the third with their lead getting up to 12, 34-22. Facing their largest deficit of the game, the Lasers struck back with a 13-3 run of their own, narrowing the Cadet's lead to just two going into the fourth. Keeping the momentum going into the fourth, a Juju Nealy three recaptured the lead for the Lasers for the first time since they led 4-2. The two teams then traded buckets over the next several minutes but after Shirle Major hit a three giving them the lead back, they would not relinquish it again. In fact, after going up 44-43, they would outscore the Cadets 25-13 for the remainder of the fourth quarter and take a 69-56 win.
Juju Nealy led all scorers on the night with 17 points and also added 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Blaize Mack (12), Mia Sullivan-Saunders (11), and Shirle Major (10) were the other Lasers in double figures on the day.
