WBB: Lasers Lose Heartbreaker in OT

Farmington, ME - The Lasell Lasers fell in overtime to the UMaine-Presque Isle Owls by a score of 87-82. The loss drops the Lasers to 0-3 on the season, while the Owls are now 1-2. The 82 points are the most the Lasers have scored this season.

The game was the definition of a back-and-forth affair, as the largest lead in the first half by either team was when the Lasers went up by seven at 35-28. But the Owls answered with 7-0 runs to tie things up. The two teams would head into the half tied at 47.

Just like the first half, the second half was as close as can be. The Lasers once again went up by as much as five, but the Owls again tied things back up. The Lasers held a two-point lead after three, leading 65-63.

After three straight high scoring quarters, things slowed down in the fourth, as there was a 2.5-minute stretch with scoring. That stretch was broken when the Owls went on a 7-0 run, which included another 2.5-minute stretch with neither team scoring. With just a minute remaining, the Lasers took a timeout while trailing 72-68. Out of the timeout Jasmine DePina (Providence, RI) made a layup to draw the Lasers within two. After the two teams traded some free throws, the Lasers came out of a timeout with 27 second left and the ball. Off of a pass from Juju Nealy (Fitchburg, MA), Shirle Major (Worcester, MA) made a layup while getting fouled with 13 second left. She would sink the free throw to ties things up at 75. The Owls would be unable to get a shot off on their final possession, sending the game to overtime.

After the Owls started overtime on a 4-0 run in the first minute, DePina nailed a three pointer to make things 79-78. The Lasers would then take the lead on an Angelina DiNunzio (Moorestown, NJ) layup with 2.5 minutes remaining. After an Owls three pointer to take a lead, Nealy would hit two free throws to tie things at 82 with 90 second remaining. The Owls would go on a 5-0 run to end the game, and take the win.

The Lasers used a balanced attack in this game, as four players scored in double digits, led by Shirle Major's 23. Behind her was Nealy with 16, Mia Sullivan-Sanders with 14, and DiNunzio with 10.

Up Next - The Lasers will look to bounce back on Saturday, November 19th as they take on UMaine Farmington at 3pm.
